As we wrap up our look at small businesses on Fire Island and how they’re #OpenForBiz, today we feature The Palms Hotel in Ocean Beach.

A boutique hotel with 42 rooms and suites right in the downtown area, The Palms has every amenity you’d find at other hotels and all you’ll need for your visit to Fire Island….beach gear, bicycles, a quiet courtyard area, even a Starbucks.

Family-run, The Palms Hotel, like dozens of others at the Long Island resort community, was heavily damaged by Supertorm Sandy.  Owner and general manager Chris Mercogliano says The Palms had about $1 million in damages.  But just like the other businesses there – including Rachel’s Bakery (link) and The Flair House (link), which we featured earlier this week – The Palms has rebuilt and is ready for the summer season.  As Chris says, “We’re ready for people to come.  Hope to see you soon.”

Fire Island isn’t just a beach, it’s not just a day-trip destination.  It’s a small-town community of about 500 year-round residents that swells to the thousands during the summer months.  But the small businesses there keep the small-town feel and despite adversity and nasty storms, are #OpenForBiz
