Verizon Wireless HopeLine Program Donates $5,000 To Prince George's County Hospital Center in Laurel, Maryland

LAUREL, MD — Continuing its commitment to domestic violence prevention, Verizon Wireless has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Prince George's Hospital Center Sexual Assault program. The grant check was presented to Prince George’s County, Maryland State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey in honor of his longstanding leadership against domestic violence as he prepares to leave public office.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office has a longstanding partnership with the Prince George’s County Hospital Center and has worked to provide training and support services for victims, hospital staff, and law enforcement. The grant from Verizon Wireless, made possible by the company’s HopeLine® Phone recycling program, will support the training of law enforcement and medical staff and the production of educational and victim resource materials, including the “SAFE” cards, which law enforcement officers give to victims.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to honor Mr. Ivey and his outstanding work on behalf of domestic violence victims than to fund a program that’s making a tremendous difference in victims’ lives,” said Mike Maiorana, regional president, Verizon Wireless. “Mr. Ivey has used the power of his office as a megaphone to make others aware of the scourge of domestic violence, and his leadership has helped countless survivors to get the help they need to rebuild their lives.”

Verizon Wireless’ long-running HopeLine program collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to victims, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country.

Since the HopeLine program was launched in 2001, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 7 million phones, awarded millions in cash grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations across the country; distributed more than 90,000 phones with the equivalent of more than 300 million minutes of free wireless service to be used by victims of domestic violence; and kept more than 200 tons of electronics waste and batteries out of landfills.
