When you’re recognized as a top company for executive women and working mothers, that means you’re working hard to maintain a supportive company culture that promotes women into executive ranks. At Verizon, we’re proud to be named on the Working Mother  Best Company for Multicultural Women and the 2019 NAFE (National Association for Female Executives) Top Companies for Executive Women lists.

The 2019 Working Mother 100 Best Companies for Multicultural Women list includes companies that train their recruiters, hiring managers, HR departments and executives to understand bias and make their workplaces inclusive. At Verizon, we work hard at being one of the top ten companies that provide opportunity and growth for multicultural women.

Now in its 21st year, NAFE’s list of top companies includes organizations that have high female representation in key management positions and programs and policies that help women reach senior leadership roles. NAFE, a division of Working Mother Media, has been a leader in breaking the glass ceiling by identifying the top companies that actively recruit, develop and advance talented women. NAFE looks at how companies are doing in several areas key to success for female executives, including:

  • Advancing women into senior corporate roles.
  • Advocating best practices that demonstrate effectiveness in advancing women (mentoring, sponsorships, involvement in employee resource groups and leadership-development training).
  • Providing supportive benefits and policies, including flexible work arrangements and parental leave.
  • Creating a diverse and inclusive corporate culture.

Verizon works hard to be a top company for women.  It starts with a commitment to gender diversity and recognizing the importance of attracting the best female talent as an integral part of our success. Here are some of Verizon’s numbers that tell the story:

  • 35% of total employees are women
  • 30% of corporate executives are women
  • 42% of women participating in leadership-development programs
  • 33% of our board of directors are women

And, here are just a few of our programs that support the advancement of women:

  • A seven-month mentorship program for managers matches senior executives and V Teamers with the goal of advancing leadership skills and development.
  • In 2016, we launched unconscious bias workshops for our leadership teams to explore this topic and how to mitigate its impact to create a more inclusive workplace for all.
  • This year, we’re expanding formal leadership training for V Teamers in different functions and job levels.
  • The Women’s Association of Verizon Employees, (WAVE), an Employee Resource Group with over 8,000 members, develops V Teamers around the 4Cs – career, customer, community and culture – through training, networking, mentoring, collaboration and volunteering.

As we look ahead, our commitment is stronger than ever to developing women leaders at every level of the business, because it’s essential to our success. We’ll continue to invest in attracting and developing female talent, and building our reputation for having an inclusive culture. Other actions will include:

  • Refreshing and rolling out new leadership development programs, working through Women at Verizon Employee Resource Group (WAVE) and other ERGs to empower women, and engaging male V Teamers in our commitment to gender diversity and inclusion across our business.

We’re excited to be recognized as a business leader committed to advancing talented female V Teamers because it helps us to build tomorrow with the best of today.

Here are some inspirational stories from our female leaders at Verizon including Tami Erwin,  Martha Delehanty, Nicki Palmer, Genia Wilbourn, Stacy McGarr.
