NEWARK, N.J. -- A powerful multi-media play about Anne
Frank and the
hidden children of the Holocaust will be accessible to people who are
deaf or hard-of-hearing, thanks in part to a $3,300 gift from Bell
Atlantic.

The George Street Playhouse is using the contribution to underwrite a
May 18 performance of "And Then They Came For Me," which will be
accompanied by an American Sign Language interpreter and open
captions.

The play integrates live actors' portrayals of Anne Frank's life with
videotaped footage of the teenage diarist's surviving friends. It
will be followed Sunday afternoon by a thoughtful discussion of the
Holocaust.

Bell Atlantic-New Jersey President Len J. Lauer said his company was
delighted to be sponsoring a sign-language performance of the play.

"A subject as powerful as the Holocaust presented in a medium as
arresting as live drama can't be seen by too many people," Lauer said.
"We're proud of our role in bringing this play to performing arts
enthusiasts who are deaf or hard-of-hearing."

Sunday's performance will begin at 2 p.m. at the George Street
Playhouse, 9 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, N.J. Tickets are $22-$30.
