BELL ATLANTIC - PENNSYLVANIA LAUNCHES INTERNET HOMEPAGE


Philadelphia, Pa. -- Customers interested in researching the latest information on new developments at Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania need look no further than their desktop computer, as the company launched its own Internet home page today.

The site, located at http://www.bell-atl.com/ba-pa, is an educational tool for all Pennsylvanians. It shows customers where to turn for information on products and services, gives them an address where they can contact Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania via cyberspace, and provides facts on the company's leadership. Information on key activities and policy positions can be viewed by clicking on one of four categories: "Advancing Education," "Building the Economy," "Fostering Competition," and "Improving Health Care."

"The telecommunications landscape in Pennsylvania is changing at the speed of light," said William Harral, president - Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania. "Our new home page helps guide customers through those changes and demonstrates how we are responding to community needs in a competitive environment."

Internet users will be able to access the site 24 hours a day, at their convenience. They can browse, read, or print out sections for their own use.

Described in the "Advancing Education," section are a number of innovative telecommunications and distance learning projects supported by Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania that improve available educational resources. Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania grants have supported several efforts, including those at the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the School District of Philadelphia, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh.

The changing telecommunications environment is the focus of information in the "Fostering Competition" section. It discusses telecommunications regulations, how increasing competition affects telephone rates, and potential changes in Pennsylvania area codes to provide more phone numbers as the supply of numbers is rapidly exhausted.

The "Building the Economy" section discusses Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania projects designed to help local communities and stimulate economic development within the Commonwealth.

Bell Atlantic initiatives to improve medical care, particularly in rural areas, are included in the "Improving Health Care," section. Through a number of partnerships and grants, the company has provided funds to establish electronic telemedicine networks, improve health care education, and renovate a community hospital emergency center.
