Bell Atlantic Says Tests Show CDMA Digital Platform Best
Course For Wireless Future
CDMA Systems Currently Being Deployed by Company's Cellular and PCS
Operations
PHILADELPHIA -- Bell Atlantic has released the following
statement concerning the deployment of a new standard for digital
wireless telecommunications, called Code Division Multiple Access, or
CDMA, by the wireless industry:
-
"We believe CDMA is a viable commercial digital technology.
A trial system deployed in Trenton, NJ, by our cellular company, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile (BANM), has met
or exceeded our expectations, providing up to nine times the capacity of
analog wireless networks. The 13 kilobit vocoder voice quality is
superior to other digital standards, and even comparable to landline
service. BANM plans to have commercial CDMA available in all of its
markets early next year.
"At the same time, our PCS company, PrimeCo Personal
Communications, has successfully completed testing of CDMA in all 11 of
its markets, and is on track for a national launch of commercial service
in the fourth quarter of this year. Ultimately, customers will be able
to purchase phones that will operate on both the BANM and PrimeCo
networks, nationwide.
"CDMA, which has become the dominant digital standard for
both cellular and PCS carriers in North America, will offer our customers
next-generation wireless services like Caller ID, short messaging and
data applications. It will also enhance security of their conversations
and greatly increase the battery life, or talk-time of their portable
phones."
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE:
BEL) is at the forefront of
the new communications, entertainment and information industry. In the
mid-Atlantic region, the company is the premier provider of local
telecommunications and advanced services. Globally, it is one of the

New Zealand and is actively developing high-growth national and
international business opportunities in all phases of the industry.
