When Delaware needed to expand services to residents and businesses while providing state employees with advanced unified communications tools, it turned to Verizon for a managed solution that will serve as the essential platform for a range of new applications and programs.

Verizon's solution consolidates the state's various technology resources into a single managed environment that links hundreds of state offices and school districts while setting the stage for the adoption of advanced applications that support the state's initiatives for data center consolidation, telework and business continuity.

"Verizon's network solution serves as a foundation that plays a role in everything we do - from deploying new applications to launching new programs," said Jim Sills, secretary and chief information officer for the Delaware Department of Technology and Information. "The way we conduct business in state government is evolving and the network infrastructure is vital. Gov. Jack Markell has made it clear that technology will serve as a critical asset as Delaware moves forward to create more and better private-sector jobs, stronger public schools and a more responsive and cost-effective government."

Delaware is deploying Verizon IP Trunking across a private IP network service to extend the capabilities and reach of its Ethernet network.  Verizon's Burstable Enterprise Shared Trunks (BEST) capability, available with the company's IP Trunking solution, enables the state to use idle trunk capacity at one location to accommodate an increase in communications traffic at another, boosting efficiency and lowering costs.

By upgrading its network infrastructure, the state will be able to reduce the number of data centers that serve state agencies, which, in turn, is expected to reduce energy consumption and costs, and help the agencies meet environmental-conservation goals.

Bette DeRogatis, area vice president for Verizon, said: "Delaware was the first state in the nation, and it's fitting that it is a leader in deploying technology for the business of government. As we see governments nationwide evolving beyond the traditional four walls of a Capitol office to become more virtual, Delaware is a great example of a state building a strong network foundation to support improved services for its end users - consumers and businesses."
