GTE MOBILNET AND BELL ATLANTIC NYNEX MOBILE SIGN
AGREEMENT TO EXPAND
CDPD COVERAGE AREA
Carriers Can Provide Data Service
To Customers In Each Other's Territories
ATLANTA -- In a landmark agreement, GTE Mobilnet and Bell Atlantic
NYNEX Mobile announced that today they can provide Cellular Digital
Packet Data (CDPD) services to customers in all of each other's
territories. The agreement represents a major step toward seamless
national CDPD service, particularly important to people and companies
who conduct business on a national scale. For example, employees of a
company based in Houston, Texas (GTE territory), with offices in New
York City (Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile territory) can use CDPD service
in Texas and New York at the same rates, receive one bill for service,
and have one point of contact for customer service.
GTE Mobilnet and Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile hold licenses covering
most major metropolitan areas in 18 states and the District of
Columbia.
"This agreement, our similar agreement with Ameritech, and GTE
Mobilnet's recently announced aggressive service pricing, demonstrates
significant progress toward delivering on the promise of affordable,
nationwide CDPD service," said Jay Sheth, GTE Mobilnet
director-business market planning. "The capabilities provided by
this
agreement are as important to the advancement of wireless data service
as roaming has been to cellular voice users. It represents the next
major step toward national CDPD solutions."
"This agreement represents the commercial manifestation and
implementation of CDPD's inherent capability to make many networks
operate as one," said Mike Franklin, director-wireless data
marketing
for Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile. "Seamless, national CDPD service --
across Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile's and GTE Mobilnet's footprints --
will now be a reality."
GTE Mobilnet and Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile each set their own rates
for service. To make billing as simple as possible for the customer,
users will receive a single bill from their home service provider for
all their usage -- regardless of location.
GTE Mobilnet and Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile are both charter members
of The CDPD Forum, Inc., a trade association dedicated to promoting
use of the CDPD standard.
Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile currently provides CDPD service in nine
states and many major metropolitan areas including New York City,
Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, DC, and Pittsburgh.
GTE Mobilnet provides CDPD service in nine states, with coverage in
major cities like San Francisco, Houston, Cleveland, and Tampa. (See
