WALLINGFORD, CT -- Jack Plating has been named president of the New England/Upstate New York region for Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile.

Plating will be responsible for sales, marketing, network systems expansion, finance and administration in the region which includes all of New England and Upstate New York.

Plating replaces Tom Bartlett, who was named president and CEO for Bell Atlantic International Wireless Inc. in August. Plating will be located in the company's regional headquarters in Woburn, Mass.

Prior to this appointment, Plating was vice president for Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile's Southeast region, covering North and South Carolina. Plating guided the reorganization of the Southeast region and the establishment of its headquarters in Greenville. He was also responsible for directing the company's expansion into rural service area markets which increased coverage in the Carolinas.

"Jack brings an outstanding track record from the Southeast region to his new assignment," said Cynthia White, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile. "He has grown the customer base in excess of 70 percent in the past four years and aggressively expanded the region's cellular coverage "footprint" through the acquisition of six new rural service area markets.

Plating began his career in the telecommunications industry in 1981 as district sales manager for Motorola Communications and Electronics and has held management positions at Digital Paging Systems and A+ Communications. Actively involved in his local community of Greenville, he was named the 1994 Business Person of the Year by Greenville (S.C.) Business magazine.

Plating earned a degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Arkansas in 1975.

Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile, headquartered in Bedminster, N.J., is the largest wireless service provider on the East Coast and the second largest provider in the United States. The company offers a full range of wireless voice, data, and paging communications solutions to its three million customers in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and, through a separate subsidiary, in the Southwest. The company was formed in July 1995, through the combination of Bell Atlantic's Mobile and NYNEX's cellular operations. The new company has more than 5,000 employees.
