Life Technologies needed to consolidate its various regional communications networks and software platforms, and improve its application performance.  To accomplish this, the global provider of biotechnology research tools chose Verizon Business to deploy an integrated managed IT and networking solution, which will also position the company for continued rapid growth.

Under a three-year agreement, Verizon Business will build and manage a new IP-based network connecting more than 100 Life Technologies locations, as well as implement Akamai Technologies' services to help boost performance of Life Technologies' e-commerce sites, which  collectively logged 13 million visitors in 2009.

The enhanced communications infrastructure will enable the company to operate more efficiently while providing the essential platform to extend the deployment of a centralized, companywide enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to offices in the Asia-Pacific region.  The ERP system, which will replace eight older software platforms, will be used to support customer-relationship management, sales and revenue reporting, and company-critical manufacturing and distribution applications.

Life Technologies, which had $3.3 billion in sales in fiscal 2009, was able to speed website application performance by as much as eight times in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region by implementing Akamai's Dynamic Site Accelerator services and global content-delivery platform.  This eliminated the need to build additional infrastructure capacity and provides research scientists with reliable access to testing tools and equipment.

"Life Technologies has experienced significant growth and is poised for further expansion," said Joe Beery, the company's senior vice president and chief information officer.  "Working with Verizon Business, we now have a solid foundation on which to more quickly develop new products, enhance customer satisfaction and meet the often time-critical requirements of the scientific community."

Verizon Business offers a comprehensive portfolio of managed and IT services for the health care and life sciences industries.  The company's global IP infrastructure and data centers provide a solid foundation coupled with a range of solutions designed to help transform patient care delivery, enhance access to care and better manage costs.  Visit the Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions website for more information.
