Local telephone calling areas expand

ALBANY, NY -- Beginning Friday, Oct. 20, Taconic Telephone and NYNEX will expand the local calling areas in several exchanges. Tolls are being removed for the following calls: In both directions between Chatham and Albany, West Lebanon and Albany, Stephentown and Albany, as well as both ways between Stephentown and Troy. Calls will be local from Nassau and Chatham to Kinderhook. Pending the results of a survey being conducted by their local phone company, Kinderhook customers may also have local calling to Chatham and Nassau. Taconic Telephone customers in Stephentown, West Lebanon and Chatham will pay a higher monthly rate for basic service to reflect the added value of expanded local calling areas.

The expansion will increase the number of telephone lines a Stephentown customer can reach without paying a toll charge from 4,732 to 199,898. The Chatham local calling area size will expand from 18,832, to 155,269 lines, and West Lebanon from 13,221 to 143,430.

NYNEX's Albany exchange includes phone numbers beginning with the digits: 225, 227, 242, 262, 342, 367, 391, 396, 421, 422, 423, 424, 426, 427, 428, 432, 433, 434, 435, 436, 437, 438, 439, 441, 442, 443, 445, 446, 447, 448, 449, 451, 453, 454, 455, 457, 458, 459, 461, 462, 463, 465, 466, 467, 469, 470, 471, 472, 473, 474, 475, 477, 478, 479, 482, 484, 485, 486, 487, 488, 489, 495, 496, 525, 526, 527, 573, and 577.

The Troy exchange includes all telephone number beginning with the digits: 233, 235, 237, 238, 266, 279, 270, 271, 272, 273, 274, 276, 279, 283, 285, and 286. Chatham numbers begin with 392,Stephentown with 733, West Lebanon with 794, and Nassau with 766.
