STAMFORD, Conn. -- Mary Beth Bardin has been named senior vice president - public affairs and communications for GTE Corp., effective immediately. She reports to GTE Vice Chairman Michael T. Masin.

Bardin, 43, is responsible for all corporate and business unit public affairs activities worldwide, including media relations, employee and executive communications, and community economic development. She replaces Harvey Greisman, who resigned in October.

Having begun her career with GTE in 1988 as manager - employee communications in the former GTE Telephone Operations, Bardin progressed through a variety of increasingly responsible positions, and most recently served as vice president - public affairs for the companys U.S.-based units.

Mary Beth's knowledge of the business, along with her superb communications skills and proven leadership capabilities, are the right combination for the challenges and opportunities GTE faces today, Masin said. She will be an outstanding leader for this important function, and a strong addition to GTE's senior leadership team.

Prior to joining GTE, Bardin worked in public relations for Fidelity Investments in Dallas, and began her career as a reporter for the Associated Press. Bardin is a graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

As previously announced, GTE is in the midst of a consolidation of certain corporate and operating-unit staffs that will result in the relocation of the corporate headquarters from Stamford, to the Dallas, Texas area, where the company already has 10,000 employees. Until the completion of the move, Bardin will divide her time between Stamford and Dallas.

With 1997 revenues of more than $23 billion, GTE is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies and a leading provider of integrated telecommunications services.
