New Jersey Resident to Lead Verizon's Customer Satisfaction Efforts

NEW YORK - Alina B. Mateo, a resident of Englewood, N. J., has been named vice president - Customer Assurance for Verizon. She will be responsible for establishing and managing quality care standards for the company's 31.3 million local phone customers. She also will direct communication and employee programs for Verizon's Domestic Telecom finance division.

In her new position, Mateo will report to Verizon Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Doreen Toben.

"Alina is an experienced professional who has a thorough knowledge of our diverse markets and a proven record of assuring excellent customer service," said Toben. "She will help us build on Verizon's record of delivering high quality service to customers nationwide."

Mateo joined NYNEX in 1983 as a staff accountant. Advancing through several positions of increasing responsibility, she helped provide financial services to the company's start-up and non-regulated operations. In 1994, she was named director of finance for NYNEX Worldwide Services Group and was assigned to the company's cable telephony team in the United Kingdom. Later, as director of accounting operations, Mateo was responsible for consolidating NYNEX financial results and managing a $4 billion accounts payable operation.

Mateo later led several merger-planning teams during the Bell Atlantic-NYNEX merger and assumed responsibility for the financial assurance of the merged companies' wireless, directory and international properties in 1997. She also directed the company's five-year financial plan which supported the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE to form Verizon. In 1999, Mateo was named director of business analysis - customer response for Verizon's national operations.

Mateo, a native of Cuba, is actively involved in Verizon's Hispanic Support Organization and Women's Association of Verizon Employees. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's of business administration in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Mateo also has completed executive education programs at Duke University and the Wharton School of Business.
