NYNEX Reaches Agreement with RCN Telecom Services To Interconnect Telephone Networks in New England
BOSTON (Feb. 4, 1997) -- NYNEX announced today that
it has signed new interconnection agreements in Maine, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont with RCN Telecom
Services, a subsidiary of C-TEC Corporation.
The agreements are designed to help meet the
requirements for NYNEX's entry into long-distance.
The new agreement expands on similar arrangements
NYNEX reached with RCN for New York in September and
Massachusetts in October to connect the companies'
networks.
"This brings us much closer to realizing the
opportunities envisioned by the Telecommunications Act,
including the development of a robust wholesale market for
communications services throughout New England," said Jack
Goldberg, NYNEX Vice President - Wholesale Markets. "The
agreements further demonstrate that when someone is ready to
be a new local telephone company they can get what they need
from NYNEX.
Unlike others, whose interests also lie in protecting
their current markets from NYNEX competition, RCN is fully
committed to bring competition to this market."
NYNEX has been engaged in negotiations with more than
40 telecommunications carriers in order to complete
interconnection agreements designed to open local telephone
markets to competition.
Opening those markets is one of the requirements for
NYNEX's entry into long-distance in the Northeast.
NYNEX has signed 19 comprehensive interconnection /
resale agreements with competitors in its home territory to
date.
