BASKING RIDGE, N.J. and HOPKINTON, MASS.  - Verizon Business is expanding its relationship with EMC Corp. to offer a new set of software-as-a-service (SaaS) capabilities.

Verizon Business plans to leverage EMC's newly announced enterprise-class SaaS platform, EMC Fortress(tm), to deliver EMC's new SaaS applications that will offer businesses advantages over traditional ways of delivering software applications to corporate users.

Growing in popularity, SaaS provides computing applications from a secure server over the Web, which eliminates the need to load, update and maintain software on individual laptops and desktops, resulting in readily available applications that can be more quickly deployed and flexibly utilized.  This pay-as-you-go SaaS model offers enterprises the ability to help control setup and operational costs and rapidly deploy new services, while helping to reduce the strain on internal IT staffing resources.

"Verizon Business knows what customers need to succeed in today's highly competitive marketplace," said Nancy Gofus, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of Verizon Business. "To enable their success, we are expanding our solutions from delivering communications applications to IT management applications in a SaaS delivery model. Our expanded relationship with EMC will help us to accelerate our ability to do so."

The importance and acceptance of SaaS among businesses continues to accelerate across all markets.  According to industry analyst research, a majority of companies surveyed about SaaS indicated that this new delivery model is very important to their business strategy.

The first offering the companies plan to jointly deliver is MozyEnterpise(tm) powered by EMC Fortress(tm), a secure backup and recovery solution for desktops, laptops and remote Windows servers in distributed enterprise environments.  The offering comes complete with enhanced security, auto activation and an easy-to-use Web-based management portal to provide secure and economical off-site data protection. Verizon Business plans to roll out the offering in the U.S. this spring.

Today Verizon Business offers e-mail, anti-virus and conferencing applications in a SaaS delivery model.  The company's SaaS focus is part of a long-term strategy to give customers more flexibility and choice when purchasing IT solutions.  These capabilities leverage the company's expansive data center footprint traversing 22 countries and running over one of the most expansive global IP networks in the world, setting the perfect stage for SaaS deployments.
