NEW YORK - To assist with relief efforts in the Dominican Republic in connection with the recent earthquake, Verizon International Foundation today donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to support the disaster response and preparedness efforts of the Dominican Red Cross.

"This gift will directly help our friends and neighbors in the Dominican Republic affected by the earthquake," said Daniel C. Petri, president of Verizon International. The Sept. 23 earthquake damaged schools and businesses, and injured some residents.

The funds donated by Verizon International will support disaster relief efforts in the Dominican Republic. These efforts will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.

Verizon owns 100 percent of CODETEL, the leading local, long-distance and wireless telephone service provider in the Dominican Republic.

"We appreciate Verizon's contribution and the company's support for the Dominican Republic and its people," said Jorge Ivan Ramirez, president of CODETEL.

Verizon Foundation last year awarded 22,000 grants totaling more than $70 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies that focus on improving basic and computer literacy, enriching communities through technology, and creating a skilled work force. The foundation uses its resources in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships in technology and connect them with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence and the economically and socially disadvantaged. The foundation also supports Verizon Volunteers, an incentive program that last year encouraged Verizon employees to volunteer more than 500,000 hours in their communities and provided $27.8 million in combined contributions to charitable and nonprofit organizations.
