NEWARK, N.J. - A consortium of 45 New Jersey colleges and universities known as NJEDge.Net has signed a three-year $13 million contract with Verizon to design, install and manage an interactive broadband data and video network that facilitates interaction among member institutions.
On behalf of NJEDge.Net, Verizon has created an Internet protocol virtual private network (IP-VPN) and custom video portal using the company's powerful new, statewide multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) broadband network. NJEDge.Net is dedicated to promoting collaboration between colleges and universities statewide through the integration of existing and emerging technologies into instruction, research and public service.
The latest in secure, top-quality networking technology, the Verizon network offers NJEDge.Net the benefits and features of a private network at a lower total cost of ownership. Rather than running over a dedicated or private network, NJEDge.Net traffic now flows over Verizon's public network. The IP-VPN service supports advanced applications such as real-time video conferencing and distance learning, as well as NJEDge.Net's New Jersey Virtual University, a repository of online courses addressing workforce development requirements and life-long learning opportunities.
The new Verizon MPLS network has built-in intelligence to accommodate whatever existing technology is deployed at each college or university, enabling schools to join the network without buying new on-site equipment. Verizon Select Services Inc., the company's long-distance affiliate provides enterprise long distance services.
The NJEDge.Net network is one of Verizon's initial designs using MPLS architecture and represents a customized deployment of the technology. As part of the company's Enterprise Advance initiative, MPLS technology will be deployed over a national network that is currently nearing completion.
