BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Verizon customers in several Broome County communities are receiving improved communication services as a result of a $2.3 million upgrade of Verizon's telecommunications network along Route 17.

About three miles of copper wires between the Broome County communities of Occanum and West Windsor were replaced with fiber-optic cable, expanding the capacity of the network and enhancing its reliability. The fiber will be used to improve communications between Verizon's switching centers and its customers, as well as between Verizon customers and customers of an adjacent independent telephone company.

Additionally, Verizon has replaced a large portion of the aerial cable with underground cable, making the network less susceptible to damage from adverse weather conditions or accidental cable cuts. Cable once strung along 200 telephone poles on Route 17 was transferred to underground conduit systems.

The project also lays the groundwork for expansion of new services, such as the high-speed Internet access known as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service, to Verizon customers in the area.

"We continue to upgrade our network to provide customers across the Southern Tier with high-speed access to the Internet, work-at-home capabilities, as well as a host of other advanced services," said Paul A. Crotty, president of Verizon New York.

"The Route 17 fiber project highlights Verizon's continued commitment to improving and expanding its network in the region," he said. "Whether deploying new fiber-optic systems or offering popular calling features and new, innovative local and long-distance calling plans, Verizon is helping consumers and businesses make progress every day."
