NEW YORK - Verizon Communications is one of "America's 50 Best Companies for Minorities," according to Fortune magazine. The magazine's annual list will appear in its July 9 issue.
Fortune sent surveys to all Fortune 1,000 companies and 200 of the country's largest privately held firms, and compared those that responded in 15 different categories, including minority representation in the work force, in management and among a company's suppliers. Verizon ranked 30th on the list and fourth in the charitable giving category, which measured the percentage of charitable contributions primarily benefiting minorities.
"Verizon is committed to making diversity an integral part of our business," said Oscar Gomez, Verizon vice-president, Office of Diversity and Business Compliance. "We view this recognition as proof that our Verizon Diversity Strategy is making a difference."

The Verizon Diversity Strategy helps the company shape a corporate culture that respects the distinct characteristics, talents and contributions of its employees. It includes:
- The Development Leadership Initiative for the career development, retention and advancement of minorities and women.
- Diversity councils charged with developing diversity plans for each Verizon line of business.
- Professional mentoring, pairing senior leaders with minority employees to provide career counseling, networking opportunities and increased visibility for employees.
- Supplier education and development programs to help increase Verizon's partnerships with diverse vendors.
In an article accompanying its list of the best companies for minorities, Fortune notes that "the companies that make the list do more than pay lip service to diversity." They make it part of their culture. "In a difficult economy it is especially important to highlight those employers that have done the most to make their companies reflect America's increasingly diverse demographics," the article said.
