Verizon Names New Head of Diversity, Ethics and Workplace Programs

NEW YORK - Verizon Communications has named Magda Yrizarry to lead its award-winning diversity, ethics and workplace programs.
Yrizarry, who previously led Verizon's Public Policy and Strategic Alliances group, will serve as vice president of Workplace Culture and Compliance. She reports to Executive Vice President of Human Resources Marc Reed and succeeds Oscar C. Gomez, who is retiring after 30 years with Verizon. Yrizarry will be responsible for designing strategies related to diversity, ethics, company culture, safety and environment.
"Verizon is fortunate to have Magda, with her significant company and community experience, serve in this important position," Reed said. "I know that Magda will build upon our diversity and workplace accomplishments to help us create a more innovative, competitive and results-based culture."
Verizon is a recognized leader in work force diversity, ethics and employee programs. An active recruiter of diverse employees, the company prepares its multicultural work force for career advancement through mentoring and leadership development programs like the Verizon Development and Leadership Initiative. The program, which was named a "Corporate Best Practice for 2002" by the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), helps participants identify professional goals and network with Verizon executives.
Minority employees represent nearly 30 percent of Verizon's work force and hold nearly18 percent of top management positions. Citing improvements "from top to bottom," Fortune magazine rated Verizon 14th on its list of the Best Companies for Minorities in 2004. In April, DiversityInc. magazine also named Verizon one of the Top 50 Companies for Diversity for the third consecutive year.
Verizon was one of the first large employers to create an ethics office headed by an executive responsible for ethics compliance. Verizon's employee Code of Business Conduct has become a model for other companies, and Verizon was the first recipient of the Business Ethics Award from Bentley College, Waltham, Mass.
Yrizarry is a founding member of 100 Hispanic Women, chairperson of ASPIRA of New York and a member of the ASPIRA Association's executive board. She is the recipient of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Foundation's highest honor, the President's Award, for her commitment to Latino youth and the Hispanic community.
In her previous position, Yrizarry developed strategic alliances with national multicultural organizations, and represented Verizon on issues of public policy and corporate responsibility. She began her Verizon career at New York Telephone in 1990 and served in various assignments in community relations, market development and governmental affairs, and at the Verizon Foundation. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in regional planning from Cornell University, and completed the executive training program at Harvard University.
