NEW YORK - Verizon has appointed Tracey Edwards vice president for the company's Island-Metro market area, which covers Long Island, Queens and the Bronx. Edwards replaces Patrick Welsh, who retired in June after 34 years with the company.

In her new position, Edwards will be responsible for managing regional service and continuing to build out Verizon's new, all-fiber network to approximately 3.5 million consumer and business customers across the market area.

"With more than 25 years of experience working for Verizon, Tracey's knowledge of the industry and this region are invaluable," said Maura Breen, Verizon senior vice president and general manager for New York. "We are excited for Tracey to take on this leadership position, particularly at a time when we are bringing a wealth of exciting new services to our New York customers."

Since joining the company in 1979, Edwards has held a number of positions with Verizon in Information Services, Network Services, Human Resources and Product & Technology Delivery. Most recently, she served as vice president of staffing and diversity for Verizon's Human Resources organization.

Edwards also is involved in various community and civic organizations, including the Long Island Coalition of NAACP branches, the Suffolk Minorities in Law Enforcement and the Lions Club. In January 2006, she was named to the New York Urban League's Board of Directors. She previously served as the chairwoman of the Town of Huntington's planning board and as vice president of the Elwood Board of Education.

Edwards and her husband, Walter, reside in Dix Hills, N.Y.
