PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Verizon today opened a new center in Pawtucket to support the communications needs of Internet service providers (ISPs) from Maine to Virginia, bringing as many as 100 jobs to the city by the end of the year.

Company, state and local officials participated in the opening of the new Verizon Broadband Maintenance and Control Center at 2 Pleasant St. in Pawtucket.

"We welcome Verizon's continued commitment to our state," said Tom Schumpert, executive director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. "In addition to adding jobs through the opening of this center, Verizon's advanced network and expertise is essential for attracting and sustaining economic development in Rhode Island."

"The opening of this center further demonstrates Verizon's commitment to Pawtucket and Rhode Island," said Donna Cupelo, region president for Verizon Massachusetts/Rhode Island. "This is one of many economic development initiatives Verizon has implemented within the Ocean State. Verizon selected Pawtucket for the center because of its highly skilled workforce."

Employees at the Pawtucket center will provide Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) provisioning and maintenance services to mid-Atlantic and Northeast-based ISPs that offer high-speed Internet access to their customers using Verizon's DSL network.
