The Department of Commerce Internet Task Force released a series of recommendations Thursday (Dec. 16) on ways to protect and improve online privacy and other personal information for consumers and businesses.  The following statement should be attributed to Kathleen Zanowic, Verizon's chief privacy officer.

"Verizon congratulates the Obama Administration and the Commerce Department for their green paper on online and consumer privacy. It is a serious and important contribution to developing a comprehensive and sensible privacy policy for consumers and businesses.

"Verizon has a long history of caring for and responding to the privacy concerns of our customers.  The company continually works in collaboration with government and industry efforts to safeguard and improve the online experience.

"Verizon shares the Commerce Department's view that consumer trust in the Internet is vital to its continued growth and innovation.

"We are studying the department's recommendations, and look forward to continued work with the department, the Federal Trade Commission, and other industry and stakeholder groups to improve privacy safeguards and practices so that technological innovations may continue to thrive while the privacy of personal information is protected."
