SAN DIEGO - As part of its nationwide expansion efforts, Verizon SuperPages is delivering the first of three San Diego area telephone directories - branded Verizon SuperPages. Verizon, the largest publisher of both English- and Spanish-language directories, is now distributing more than 425,000 SuperPages to San Diego Metro residents and businesses, including more than 95,000 bilingual directories to the most-heavily Hispanic populated areas.

This is Verizon's first directory push in San Diego, as the North County and South and East County SuperPages will be delivered this summer.

"Verizon recognized a need for a more comprehensive directory in San Diego because of the area's cultural diversity and area residents' use of SuperPages.com," said Michael Autry, local Verizon SuperPages general sales manager. "San Diego was the third most searched city on SuperPages.com in 2002, and the area's residents, businesses and visitors can now benefit from all of Verizon SuperPages' many community resources - online, print and bilingual."

According to national research firm Claritas, San Diego has a 27 percent Hispanic population. The areas within San Diego, where the flipped bilingual SuperPages are being delivered, have a 51 percent Hispanic population.

Local Resources

The San Diego Metro SuperPages, which are on display and available in all metro Verizon Wireless retail stores, has a localized cover featuring Chargers Stadium, the San Diego Zoo and Seaworld. Included are a Community Magazine and a Dining Your Way! restaurant guide which spotlights area restaurants with an A-Z index, menus and maps. The bilingual SuperPages features a Spanish cover and content on one side and an English cover and content on the other.

San Diego shoppers and businesses also have access to Verizon's leading online directory and shopping resource, SuperPages.com, as well as the only national Spanish-language online directory - SuperPages.com en Español. Both sites have local San Diego content. Just as you can find a local dentist in the San Diego SuperPages, you can search for Dentists or Dentistas in San Diego on SuperPages.com or SuperPages.com en Español.

In the Community

In October 2002, Verizon SuperPages donated $20,000 to the San Diego Public Library for a pilot program to improve the information literacy of San Diego parents. Currently, 100 parents from two branches are participating in 12, hour-long workshops to advance their understanding of the impact of technology on their child's education. The San Diego Library will officially launch the "Parents, Children and Technologies @ Your San Diego Public Library" program in all 34 branches in September 2003.

Verizon SuperPages sponsors community outreach programs across the nation to increase literacy among people of all ages and to help them gain the skills they need to be successful in the workforce. These programs contribute to Verizon's commitment to increasing U.S. literacy levels.

Recently, Verizon SuperPages.com added two new community and literacy sections to its Web site: Enlighten Me for families and caregivers, and the Internet Learning Tutor for adults. Enlighten Me features SuperThinkers, a children's section with games and challenges specifically designed to help children develop critical thinking skills in a fun setting.

Verizon will distribute two additional SuperPages directories - San Diego North County and San Diego South and East - this summer, both with targeted bilingual directories. Advertising opportunities are still available for these two directories. For more information, please call 866-882-2783 or 619-237-4140.
