Verizon Supports 116 Florida Nonprofit Groups to Promote Literacy, Technology and Work Force Development

TAMPA, Fla. - Verizon reaffirmed its commitment to the communities that the company serves in Florida by providing a broad range of grants in 2003 for literacy, work force development, technology and human service programs.
Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, last year donated $1,773,769 to 116 nonprofit groups in Florida. Nationwide, the foundation donated more than $70 million to worthy causes and charities, including matching nearly $14 million in donations from employees.
"We believe in investing in our communities through strategic partnerships with organizations that support education and literacy, technology education, and health and human services," said Alan Ciamporcero, president - public policy and external affairs, Southeast region, Verizon. "Verizon's grants continue to underscore our long-standing goal of improving the communities we serve and our commitment to providing a broad range of excellent service to our customers."
Recipients of major grants included:
- Florida Literacy Coalition -- $125,000 to support community-based programs that help integrate family literacy concepts into instruction and delivery
- University of Tampa -- $100,000 to help with the creation of a technology-based program to connect schools in Florida with schools in Latin America
- Tampa Bay Partnership -- $75,000 to support the advancement of long-term technology work force development in West Central Florida
- St. Petersburg Employment & Economic Development Corp. -- $50,000 to fund an entrepreneurial training and development project in south St. Petersburg
In addition, literacy grants went to The Florida Orchestra; I Can Adult Literacy Outreach Program; Manatee County Schools Foundation; and the Polk Educational Foundation & Business Partnership, among others.
Technology grant recipients included Computer Mentor's Group; IT Florida; Clearwater Library Foundation Inc; Community AIDS Network Inc.; Mental Health Care Foundation; and the Hispanic Services Council, among others.
Verizon recognized the importance of the state's work force development programs by awarding grants to the Florida Education Foundation; TOBA Foundation; Florida Southern College; Partners in Self-Sufficiency Inc.; and Successes Unlimited Women & Youth Business Center.
Other grant recipients included The Florida Aquarium; Junior Achievement of West Central Florida; Polk Businesses for World-Class Education; Commission on Adult Basic Education; Women's Fund of Miami-Dade County; and Tampa Theatre Inc.
In addition to these grants, 446 nonprofit agencies received more than $828,000 through Verizon Volunteers, an incentive program that encourages Verizon employees to volunteer in their communities and provides matching gifts to nonprofit organizations.
