MAHWAH, NJ -- Today, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, in conjunction with Sharp Corporation, announced the availability of the Verizon Wireless Z-800 handset - the first BREWTM enabled handset with a color liquid crystal display screen in North America.

Manufactured by Sharp and branded Verizon Wireless, the Z-800 with its BREW technology allows customers to download games, entertainment, communication, health, and financial applications for a nominal fee. With Verizon Wireless becoming the first wireless carrier to provide service for BREW applications in combination with the Z-800 handset from Sharp, the style of mobile communication is rapidly changing.

Sharp is supplying Verizon Wireless with the Z-800, a sleek folding tri-mode CDMA wireless phone that incorporates an illuminated color liquid crystal display screen and the BREW platform. The Z-800's easy to read 256-color graphic screen (2 inches with a beautiful display resolution of 128 x 160 dots) is ideally suited to showcase the wide range of useful, exciting and fun BREW applications.

Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW ) is a software platform developedby wireless technology leader QUALCOMM Incorporated. The platform allows developers to create standard programs for downloading applications that work in phones thereby enhancing the versatility of mobile devices.

The Z-800 is an innovative product that reflects Sharp's commitment to produce one-of-a-kind products that enhance people's lifestyles. The Z-800 incorporates a number of Sharp's core devices and technologies, including liquid crystal display, Flash Memory, Miniaturization and Interface technology. A built-in capability of the Z-800 is a unique caller ID function capable of displaying the caller's photo along with a name and phone number.

The Verizon Wireless Z-800 is available beginning today in the San Diego market. Verizon Wireless customers in San Diego can purchase the new Z-800 BREW-enabled phone at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and participating RadioShack locations throughout San Diego. Verizon Wireless expects to introduce BREW nationwide starting in May 2002.
