NEW YORK - Marie C. JohnsMarie C. Johns, Verizon's president for Washington, D.C., has been named one of "25 Influential Black Women in Business" by The Network Journal, a black professionals and small-business magazine. Johns is being recognized for her professional achievements, outstanding community service and strong leadership skills.

The 25 women will be honored at The Network Journal's annual achievement awards luncheon March 27 in New York City.

"Women like Marie Johns and our other honorees raise the bar for their dynamic corporate leadership and dedication to the community," said Aziz Gueye Adetimirin, The Network Journal publisher. "Their personal integrity, cultural diversity and commitment to making a difference enrich the business environment and our communities."

At Verizon, Johns is responsible for the company's District of Columbia operation, overseeing service delivery to over 300,000 customers, capital investment and public policy. During her Verizon career, Johns has held positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of regulatory matters, government affairs and customer service.

Johns' community activities include serving as a Howard University trustee and co-chairing the District of Columbia's Youth Investment Council. She is a director for the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Club of Washington, the Federal City Council, the Washington Performing Arts Society and serves as founding chair of the Washington, D.C. Technology Council. She is also a member of the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church Senior Board of Stewards.

Johns holds an honorary doctorate of human letters from Trinity College. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in public administration from Indiana University and has also completed graduate management studies at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration.

Johns and her husband, Wendell, live in Washington, D.C.
