New York Wireless Customers Targeted Again For Surcharge On Phone Bills
BACKGROUND, NY — With the current legislative session scheduled to break on June 20th, several New York state legislators have introduced bills to impose a $.30 surcharge on wireless phone bills in the counties they represent. The proposed county surcharges would be in addition to a state surcharge of $1.20, increased recently from $.70 as part of the new state budget.
"It's open season on wireless phone users in New York," said Dan Mullin, director of state public policy for Verizon Wireless. "These taxes are being raised yet again under the guise of improving E-911 services, but over the past 10 years, not a single dime collected has gone toward wireless E-911 emergency services."
Concerned citizens should contact their state and local representatives.
