BLOOMINGTON, MN — Cornerstone announced today that it had received a $10,000 donation from Verizon Wireless that will help fund programs that educate and support teens in preventing violence.
"This generous support from Verizon Wireless comes at an important time for Cornerstone's teen education programs," said the agency's executive director, Susan Neis. "Funding is difficult in the current environment. But the need to support young people in controlling anger and establishing healthy relationships is increasingly vital if the cycle of violence is to be stopped."
"With the Centers for Disease Control reporting that more than one in five high school students are victims of non-sexual dating violence, it is an issue we cannot ignore," said Rich Garwood, president, Great Plains Region, Verizon Wireless. "Verizon Wireless is pleased to support Cornerstone programs that help provide teens with the support and information they need to build healthy relationships."
The donation to Cornerstone continues Verizon Wireless' 2002 focus on raising awareness of - and preventing - dating violence. In July, working with Cornerstone, the company launched the "U Have the Right" campaign, which focused on the issue. The campaign included a spoken-word CD, produced in cooperation with the High School for Recording Arts in St. Paul, a Web site (www.uhavetheright.net) with information on how to handle abusive dating relationships and a public service campaign with the Minnesota Lynx, WB-23 television and both KDWB and B-96 radio stations.
With the launch of the campaign, Verizon Wireless earlier presented Cornerstone a gift of $2,500 to support its Preventing Abuse and Violence through Education (PAVE) program, which serves high school and middle school students in Eden Prairie, Richfield and Bloomington.
Founded in 1983, Cornerstone supports a variety of services, including emergency safe housing, transitional housing, legal services, counseling and support for children and teens, to help families victimized by abuse regain stability and hope. It also provides school- and community-based initiatives to help children and teenagers cope with violence and anger. Cornerstone serves anyone in need of emergency shelter, but focuses its community programs in the Southwest Hennepin County cities of Richfield, Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Edina.
