South Carolina Coastal Residents And Visitors Benefit From Recent Verizon Wireless Investment

CHARLESTON, SC — Residents and visitors to South Carolina's coast are now experiencing increased wireless coverage and capacity in high traffic areas from Myrtle Beach to Charleston thanks to Verizon Wireless. This improvement is part of Verizon Wireless' annual multi-billion dollar network investment across the country (more than $1 billion every 90 days) to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services.

Verizon Wireless' network coverage and capacity has been enhanced in the following areas as a result of new cell sites and recent upgrades:

  • West side of Conway

  • South end of Hwy 707 near Myrtle Beach

  • Hwy 17 by Murrells Inlet

  • Dunes West and Park West around Hwy 41 in Mt. Pleasant

  • East Bay and the surrounding Market Street area in downtown Charleston

Increased coverage and service along the coast is especially important with the predications for another active hurricane season. Today, about 94 percent of Verizon Wireless transmission sites in the Carolinas have their own generators to help keep the network operating during power outages. In addition, Verizon Wireless maintains a fleet of mobile generators and Cells on Wheels (COWs) - self-powered call transmitters that can be rolled into hard-hit locations to provide additional service.

"Verizon Wireless leads in customer loyalty for a very good reason - customers know they can count on our network reliability," said Jerry Fountain, regional president of Verizon Wireless. "Since 1999, Verizon Wireless has invested $326 million in our South Carolina network, including an investment of $51 million in 2005 so the company can stay ahead of the increasing demand for our products and services."

The Verizon Wireless team of real-life test men and women, backed by the company's Network Operations team, test and retest the network's performance and durability all year round. They make more than 3.5 million test calls nationwide on Verizon Wireless' and other wireless carriers' networks, riding in specially-equipped, company-owned test vehicles and traveling more than one million miles a year. In fact, the company's 'most reliable wireless network in the nation' claim is based on these network studies.

EDITORS NOTE: Test Man Ride-Along Program for the News MediaSpecially-equipped Verizon Wireless test vehicles simultaneously test the Verizon Wireless network as well as the networks of as many as seven other wireless providers, using a mobile laptop computer to generate phonically diverse "conversations." If one of your reporters is interested in setting up an interview or ride-along test drive with your locally-based Verizon Wireless test man or woman, please contact Jared Kelowitz at 864-233-3776, ext. 24.
