Brickyard 400 Fans Will Enjoy More Reliable Wireless Service In Indianapolis, Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Verizon Wireless announced today it has revved up its network capacity by more than 50 percent for the upcoming Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 6.

The company has activated a temporary cell site and upgraded its permanent area cell sites that provide network service to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and vicinity. The enhancements enable more customers to use their wireless handsets concurrently to make calls, send and receive TXT and Picture and Messages, as well as download games and ring tones.

The temporary cell site, also known as a COLT (Cell on Light Truck), is a fully functional mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity in a given area. Verizon Wireless will place its COLT just northwest of the Speedway near the intersection of 30th Street and Georgetown Road.

"We experienced a 30 percent increase in network activity at this year's Indianapolis 500 compared to activity during the race in 2005," said Greg Haller, president—Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. "Based on our customers' year-over-year calling patterns, we anticipate that Brickyard 400 fans also will be relying more heavily on their wireless handsets to keep in touch with friends and family. Our network is prepared to handle the expected increased activity."

These network enhancements are part of Verizon Wireless' continuous effort to increase coverage and augment the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Indiana and across the country. Verizon Wireless has invested $30 billion in the last six years-$5 billion on average every year since the company was formed-to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. The company has invested more than $618 million over the past six years in its Indiana network.
