TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay has become a bit of a zoo, as guests from around the world have arrived for the Republican National Convention.  Tens of thousands of delegates, journalists, commentators, and others are in the region with smartphones, tablets, hotspots and many other wireless devices.

Verizon Wireless has prepared for record-breaking reliance on its 4G LTE and 3G networks, as these RNC visitors tweet, text, talk and more.  To help ensure coverage and services are fast, strong and reliable, Verizon Wireless for months has been completing permanent network upgrades at key RNC venues.

But the company also has unleashed a mobile menagerie of cellular technologies to boost service exactly where and when it is needed.

These include COWs (Cell On Wheels) and COLTs (Cell On Light Trucks) and CROWs (Cellular Repeater On Wheels) and GOATs (Generator On A Trailer).

“We’ve herded a huge amount of resources to ensure top coverage and services for customers at the RNC and throughout the area,” said Frank Wise, network executive director for the Verizon Wireless Florida region.  “Having this barnyard of mobile units is a great boost for our 4G LTE and 3G networks.”

Verizon Wireless operates the nation’s largest 4G LTE network and largest, most reliable 3G network. Verizon Wireless 4G LTE covers more than three-fourths of the U.S. population in 372 major markets, including Tampa Bay.

The high-speed networks will allow wireless “power users” to access thousands of advanced services and applications.  Verizon’s 4G LTE network, which covers most of the Tampa Bay area since launching in 2010, is the nation’s fastest 4G network. In real-world, fully loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps)/downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps/ uplink.

This will allow RNC visitors to connect in an instant to their company servers and email, stream videos without buffering, and download and view full-length HD movies.  Broadcast journalists can report live on HD with their smartphone, tablet or wireless modem. Songs can be downloaded in seconds, and social media lovers can post photos, videos, links and more in a flash.
