According to the 2012 “U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook”, U.S. households are home to about 70 million dogs and 74 million cats.

Pets are such an important part of the family that the Milo’s KitchenPet Parent Survey says more than half of American dog owners call themselves “Mommy” or “Daddy” when referencing their dogs, and 35 percent refer to their dog as their “son” or “daughter.”

But whether you call your pet your child or not, it’s critical to keep your pet healthy and safe. Luckily, pet “parents” today have technology at their fingertips to help.

One major fear of pet owners is that their pet will be lost. The Pet Tracker by Tagg, a lightweight device that attaches to a dog’s collar uses GPS tracking technology that allows a pet owner to see an animal’s location and receive a notification if it wanders beyond a specific area; it can even provide directions to the pet’s current location.

Many pet owners know that some animals will eat just about anything. With the Petoxins App, developed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a searchable database of plants harmful to dogs, cats and horses is only a tap away. Petoxins also includes a list of potential symptoms and information to help if poisonous plants are ingested.

For more information about keeping pets safe, the Pet First Aid: For Your Dog, Cat, Puppy or Kitten App provides detailed articles, videos and illustrations to help care for an animal in an emergency. Pet owners can also save medical information and keep track of their pet’s veterinary history.

With technology in hand, pet owners have a multitude of tools to help keep their pets safe and healthy.
