Arizona Chapter Of The U. S. Green Building Council Recognizes Verizon Wireless' Environmental Leadership At Its Inaugural Awards Event

PHOENIX, AZ — The Arizona Chapter of the U. S. Green Building Council presented two awards to Verizon Wireless at its inaugural Heavy Medals Awards luncheon on October 24 acknowledging the company’s commitment to environmental leadership.  The event honors companies with outstanding LEED® certification accomplishments.  Verizon Wireless was recognized for earning the most “Gold Certifications for Commercial Interiors” and the most “Silver Certifications for Commercial Interiors.”

Verizon Wireless further announced that more than 100 of its communications stores across the country have received the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEEDcertification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.  This achievement marks a significant milestone in the company’s effort to expand its sustainable green retail store portfolio across the United States and meet the aggressive goal of reducing carbon intensity by 50 percent within the next eight years.

Verizon Wireless Communications Stores have been widely recognized for leadership in green building design in the United States.  The company is one of just eight retailers – and the only wireless retailer -- to achieve pre-certification in the USGBC’s LEED Volume Program.  Under the LEED Volume Program, any Verizon Wireless Communications Store constructed using the pre-certified design will earn a LEED Silver or higher rating.

LEED Certification

The LEED Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

Verizon’s “evolution” communications stores are designed specifically to optimize water and energy use, enhance indoor environmental quality and reduce waste through specifications and responsible procurement and construction practices.  Each LEED-certified Verizon Wireless Communications Store is expected to deliver, on average, the following environmental benefits and associated cost savings:

  • 12,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year in energy savings from store lighting, illuminated displays and other power usage
  • 28,000 gallons of water per year, the equivalent savings of 455,000 glasses of water
  • 28 tons of construction waste diverted from landfills, equivalent to 14 automobiles

“Our customers and employees care about the environment and achieving LEED certification in our stores helps us to do the right thing and operate more efficiently for the long term,” said Marty Pompermayer, associate director – real estate for Verizon Wireless.  “We’re proud of our LEED certified retail stores and we’re committed to finding new opportunities for environmentally friendly practices across our organization.”

Leading the way in green building design is just one way Verizon Wireless demonstrates a commitment to the environment.  The company’s long established HopeLine® recycling program puts the nation’s most reliable wireless network to work in the community by turning no-longer used cell phones from any carrier into support for domestic violence victims and survivors.  Since October 2001, more than nine million phones have been collected through its stores and other points nationwide. In addition, the Verizon Wireless Cell Phone Battery Recycling program keeps electronics waste and batteries out of community landfills—more than 200 tons since 2001.
