Technology is Enhancing the INDYCAR Experience

When one thinks of INDYCAR, the first word that typically comes to mind is “fast.” INDYCAR is certainly the fastest, as well as the most versatile, motorsports series. Yet for motorsports enthusiasts, it’s so much more.

INDYCAR has a long history of innovation and, coupled with Verizon’s innovative technology, is taking the fan experience to a whole new level throughout the 2014 Verizon INDYCAR Series season.

This month, the spotlight has been on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and the world-famous Indy 500, where Verizon and INDYCAR are showcasing the latest in technology. Visitors to the Speedway have been able to sample many of these innovations firsthand, including:

  • Race Weekend Concierge that includes schedules, interactive track maps, customized text alerts, fan polling and trivia.
  • Social Aggregator, available in the Technology Pit, which pulls in the social conversation on Twitter and Instagram surrounding each race weekend.
  • A Pit Road monitor running live race feeds.
  • INDYCAR 14 app, the official mobile app of the INDYCAR Series, which offers live driver and pit crew audio, race radio broadcasting, a track map and more.

If you can’t make it to the track – no problem. You can catch the action with live in-car camera views right from the INDYCAR 14 app on your mobile phone or tablet.

Throughout the series, additional innovations will be introduced, including a more efficient and fan-friendly credential system and integration with Softcard*, a mobile payment technology that allows fans to make purchases at retail and concession locations with a tap on their near field communication (NFC)-enabled phones.

Fans at select races throughout the remainder of the season, including the Indy 500, will be able to see sneak peeks of the Team App, which uses LTE Multicast technology. Designed to enable the INDYCAR teams to receive video from multiple sources, these demonstrations will give fans an insider look at all the data and technology that drives the sport.

The intersection of racing and technology has never been more relevant, and the innovative collaboration between Verizon and INDYCAR is providing an experience that motorsports enthusiasts won’t want to miss.

*UPDATE: Google and Softcard have completed an agreement that will leverage the best technology from both companies to create a more robust mobile wallet for consumers. The mobile payment system will keep the Google Wallet name. Read more here.
