NEW YORK - Suk-Mei Mui, Verizon manager-transaction taxes, has earned the National Association of Asian American Professionals' Leadership Award. The organization presents the award to Asian-Pacific American professionals demonstrating an outstanding commitment to their companies, co-workers and community.

The organization's New York chapter recently recognized Mui and two other recipients at its annual Scholarship and Leadership Awards Dinner.

"Suk-Mei is an excellent role model and a leader within our community," said Trusha Mehta, New York chapter president. "We salute her for her dedication, commitment and contributions to the Asian-Pacific American community. We also commend Verizon for its support of the National Association of Asian American Professionals, its Asian-Pacific American employees and the community at large."

A Verizon employee since 1969, Mui is a charter member of Asian Pacific Employees for eXcellence, which addresses the professional needs of Verizon's Asian-American employees. Currently the national treasurer, she also has served as the organization's president and vice president.

Mui has also been an advocate for the company's Asian customers. In 1994 she and other members persuaded Verizon to open a Chinatown business office in New York City and helped recruit more than 200 Chinese-speaking representatives for the company's multilingual center in Queens, N.Y., where customer service, billing and repair requests are handled in customers' preferred languages.

"I'm honored to be selected for this award," Mui said. "When I think of strong role models, I think of my parents and the leaders I've worked with at Verizon. They constantly demonstrate the importance of integrity. Remember your integrity and you'll always do the right thing."

Mui, a Brooklyn resident, is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she promotes self-reliance and education for women. She holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Brooklyn College and a master's degree in finance and management from Long Island University.
