Joplin Tri-State Business Online shares which businesses in the tri-state area contributed to Joplin’s tornado recovery.
A number of businesses from the tri-state area are following the example of their neighbors in making large donations to Joplin’s tornado recovery.
In the June 6 issue of Joplin Tri-State Business Journal, it was reported that Walmart Stores, Home Depot, Leggett & Platt Inc., and TAMKO Building Products had donated $1 million apiece. Other businesses have announced donations since that time.
Con-way Inc. has made a $100,000 contribution to support disaster relief efforts. The company has also made a second $100,000 contribution to a second fund set up solely for Joplin employees of Con-way Truckload who suffered losses from the tornado. Approximately 47 local employees lost their homes completely or have found them uninhabitable from damage inflicted by the tornado.
ConocoPhillips has contributed $500,000 to the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross and will match donations made by its U.S. employees.
Bank of America has donated $200,000 to fund immediate needs of the American Red Cross, as well as long-term recovery efforts to restore basic medical services and fund the rebuilding of homes and schools. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation will also match employee pledges.
U.S. Bancorp is donating $100,000 - $50,000 to the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri-Joplin Recovery Fund, $25,000 to the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross and $25,000 to the United Way. The company is also collecting donations at its 12 southwest Missouri branches for Red Cross.
The BNSF Foundation, the charitable arm of BNSF Railway Co., is donating $100,000 to the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross.
A partnership of 11 area banks has collected more than $56,000, including corporate matches, for the American Red Cross. The banks are Guaranty Bank, Liberty Bank, BancorpSouth, Empire Bank, Great Southern Bank, Metropolitan National Bank, U.S. Bank, OakStar Bank, Springfield First Community Bank, Peoples Bank of the Ozarks and Old Missouri Bank.
Verizon Wireless and the Verison Foundation donated $50,000 to the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the company is developing mobile cell towers to the area; providing courtesy phones to emergency workers; and setting up a mobile cell phone charging station and Internet access point for all wireless device users.
