How to upgrade to the phone you want

Here are several options to help you get that new device you want sooner than you thought possible.

You’re ready for a new phone. What’s next? First things first: check to see if you’re eligible for an upgrade; go to the Upgrade Eligibility page, and type in your mobile number.

Not eligible? You still may have some other options:

Transfer upgrade eligibility from one line to another

If you have more than one line on your account, check the upgrade eligibility date for each of them on the “Upgrade Device” page in My Verizon. After logging in, you’ll see the eligibility dates listed below each of your numbers.

If a line is eligible, click “Transfer Upgrade,” pick the line you want to upgrade and then select the new phone that will replace the old one. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the upgrade.

Tip: Keep in mind that when you transfer eligibility from one line to another, the original line is no longer eligible for the upgrade discount.

Upgrade to a phone not purchased from a Verizon store or My Verizon (for example, at Apple, Best Buy or Walmart)

Make sure it’s compatible with Verizon’s network and confirm the Device ID hasn’t been suspended because the phone was reported lost or stolen.

Tip: Check to see if your phone is compatible by entering your Device ID here. If it is, the screen will read: “Your Device is compatible with the Verizon Wireless Network.” (Don’t know what your Device ID is? No worries—the same page will show you two easy ways to find it.)

Pay off your monthly device payment plan early

When you’re ready for a new device, you have the option to pay off the remaining balance of your current device anytime you want. Plus, if you use the Device Trade-In Program, you can save money by trading in your old device in good, working condition and use the trade-in value toward the upgrade.

If you purchased a device eligible under the Early Upgrade Program, you can upgrade to an eligible smartphone after 30 days and 50 percent of the device paid off. Find out more at the Samsung annual upgrade FAQ and the iPhone annual upgrade FAQ.

Tip: The monthly device payment program was formerly known as Verizon Edge. If you purchased a phone under the old program, read these FAQs to get details about your upgrade eligibility.

Buy a new phone from Verizon

If you pay the full retail price up front for a Verizon phone, then you own it outright. That makes you eligible to upgrade to a new phone at any time.
