Our commitment to social responsibility has never been more tangible than over the past weeks.

Soyirindhi Hore, an HR manager out of our Bangalore office, raised her hand to help by sharpening her virtual pencils to tutor students through Upchieve. We asked Soyirindhi a few questions around her commitment to volunteerism and why she sets aside time to give back.

Like Soyirindhi, you can make a difference across our social responsibility pillars: Digital Inclusion, Climate Protection, and Human Prosperity. Check out our Volunteer Portal and select from over 150 virtual activities that contribute to our company-wide goal of 2.5 million volunteer hours by 2025. Without further adieu, meet Soyirindhi!

Q: Tell us about yourself. How long have you been with Verizon?

A: My name is Soyirindhi, and people know me as Soyi. I joined Verizon Media in November 2019. I love the outdoors, wildlife, nature, playing sports. I passionately believe in the concept of giving. There is nothing more gratifying than to know that I can impact lives by my work. I also love reading and aspire to write some books on the philosophies of life.

Q: What inspired you to sign up for the Volunteer Platform?

A: The whole concept of giving back, doing something impactful that affects lives or communities, or preserving nature is immensely gratifying. Verizon's focus on this is something I really wanted to take advantage of, as this clearly aligns with my own sense of values and life goals.

Q: What causes or groups have you volunteered for?

A: I have been an active volunteer for various projects throughout my college life and years at work. Whenever I get an opportunity to contribute, I do so be it at nursing homes, with kids, or for community-driven projects around sustainability, waste segregation, and animal rights.

Q: Why is it important to give back and volunteer during COVID-19?

A: The current situation around the world gives each of us a tremendous opportunity to begin to understand that we do not own the planet, so it is time we became more conscious of our acts by being compassionate and always having a mindset of service. Volunteering during COVID-19 gives us a chance to think beyond ourselves.

Q: How important is it to work for a company that actively promotes and encourages volunteer activities?

A: It's an absolute privilege to work with a company that is so passionate and driven about volunteer activities. It showcases the inherent values the company stands for, and there can be nothing more satisfying than working for a company that aligns with your own thought process or value system.

Q: Do you have a story or specific example of how your volunteer efforts made a difference to an individual or in a community?

A: I participated in a state-level science quiz where the proceeds from the winning team were donated to a local school for their science experiments and to set up their labs. Luckily, I managed to win at the event. I helped set up the lab and volunteered to tutor the students.
