A big celebration took place in Parkersburg, West Virginia, this week as Verizon Wireless announced the substantial completion of its 4G LTE network build-out with Parkersburg designated as the official 500th market to launch the high-speed network.

Parkersburg standing as the 500th market to receive 4G LTE is especially notable because it helps represent the growth of the nation’s largest 4G LTE network beyond major cities and urban populations, and into every corner of the country. Verizon network expansion efforts have ramped up across the country, including states across the Midwest. Parkersburg is the third largest city in West Virginia and is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers. While other network providers are just now introducing 4G into major metropolitan areas, Verizon's coverage continues to expand beyond those massive areas and into smaller markets with exciting results.

Festivities leading up to the announcement included, among other things, a city-wide scavenger hunt giving Parkersburg residents a chance to win a 4G LTE smartphone or tablet. As part of the contest, large 4G LTE pins (a la Google map pins) were placed in locations throughout the city to highlight the effective coverage and space involved in the launch. Residents who signed up to be involved in the contest were sent clues via text messages as well as posted on Twitter.

The final stop for the scavenger hunt was the historic Blennerhassett Hotel, where those who collected the pins were invited to bring them to be entered to win 4G LTE devices.

In addition, as part of the festivities at the hotel, Verizon officials announced donations of $10,000 each to five domestic violence organizations ($50,000 total) including the Parkersburg Family Crisis Intervention Center. The donations were made possible through the company’s HopeLine® program.

In total, Verizon's network expansion into Parkersburg served as a great opportunity to showcase the expansive service our network offers while also showing that customers will continue to receive excellent coverage even in smaller markets. Our thanks go out to the residents of Parkersburg for being involved in the event and we're thrilled to continue expanding the nation's largest 4G LTE network.
