Earlier this week I had the privilege to participate in Fortune Brainstorm Green conference which was kicked off by Harrison Ford. While most of us think of him as Han Solo or Indiana Jones, I’ll remember him for one phrase he shared on stage – “Nature doesn’t need people, people need nature.”
There isn’t a better way to sum up the reasons behind Verizon’s biggest sustainability announcement to date. We need nature so much that Verizon is investing $100 million in green energy.
This initiative is already underway and will eventually enable us to generate more than 70 million kilowatts hours of our own green energy. We’re installing solar panels and fuel cells at 19 Verizon buildings -- corporate offices, call centers, data centers, and central offices -- in California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Arizona and North Carolina.
When completed next year, the project will generate enough to power more than 6,000 single-family homes a year – while eliminating 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
This initiative is part of Verizon’s overall commitment to reducing our impact on the environment, toward our overall goal of lowering our carbon intensity by 50% by 2020. Learn more about our initiatives at www.verizon.com/sustainability.
