Host Diana Alvear kicked off today’s episode of Up To Speed with the big news that Samantha Hammock has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Verizon, effective December 1.

CEO Hans Vestberg said it best: “Sam Hammock is a proven HR leader with the experience and vision to lead us in a transformative time for our industry. You can’t build the future with yesterday’s skills, and Sam will make sure we are ready with the best talent to capitalize on our next stage of growth.”

A few fun facts about Sam: she’s been Senior Vice President of Global Talent here for nearly a year, and before that she spent 14 years at American Express, most recently as the Head of Talent and Learning. Congratulations Sam!

On the Porch with Rose

If you’re looking for a new podcast, check out On the Porch with Rose Stuckey Kirk. Each episode features conversations with leading thinkers and activists who are actively working to create a better world. Her first guest is none other than Ruby Bridges, the little girl who integrated William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana in 1960. We’ve all seen the iconic photographs and Norman Rockwell painting of little Ruby. She has lived a life of activism and has a lot of stories and wisdom to share.

You can see Diana and Rose discuss her new podcast as well as milestones for Citizen Verizon
— our new corporate responsibility plan for economic, environmental and social advancement

Supporting our transgender brothers and sisters

This is a great week for all of us to learn more about the transgender community, hear the stories, and continue to advocate for transgender and non-binary equality. The week culminates on November 20 with the Transgender Day of Remembrance, when we honor all those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence.

On Friday, November 19, PRISM and WAVE will host Brave Spaces: A Transgender Day of Remembrance. This panel will feature members of the Human Rights Campaign and our own V Teamers having an honest and courageous conversation around the challenges the community faces today in society, and how allies can show up and support them.
