MagSafe: The magic
of magnets.

What is MagSafe?

MagSafe is a method of wireless charging using magnets that was developed by Apple. It's similar to traditional Qi wireless charging, which passes power from the magnets in your charger to the coils in your phone. With MagSafe, the magnets and coils are more perfectly aligned, which enables faster charging.

What is a Magsafe case?

MagSafe cases are designed to take advantage of magnetic charging without removing your phone from the case. These types of cases have charging magnets tucked neatly inside, ensuring the magnets are perfectly aligned to the coils inside your iPhone, so you get more power, quicker.

Which iPhones work with MagSafe?

MagSafe works with iPhone 12 and later. The best part is that it provides faster wireless charging: up to 15 W.

Which Airpods use MagSafe?

AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case and AirPods Max with Smart Case are all MagSafe.

Does MagSafe wear down the battery?

Not necessarily. Charging your iPhone can cause it to get a bit warmer, which can affect the battery. If the battery is getting too warm, there is software built into your iPhone that will limit how much you're able to charge the phone (under 80%) to help preserve battery life. Once your phone cools, you'll be able to continue charging again. You can also try charging in a cooler location. If your phone is charged for an extended period of time, MagSafe Battery Packs offer a feature that helps maintain the health of the battery.

Are all portable chargers wireless?

There are three types of portable chargers. The first is a traditional power bank that connects to your phone using cables. And finally, the third type lets you connect either with cables or wirelessly, so you can charge multiple devices at once.

How do wireless chargers work?

Wireless chargers work through the scientific magic of magnetic induction. They use an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between devices. The coils in the charger share energy with the coils inside the device. The result? Your battery gets powered up.

Can I bring a portable charger on a plane? What size can I take?

Yes, you can bring your portable charger with you when you travel, but it has to be packed in your carry-on bag. It cannot be stored in your checked baggage. Most airlines allow you to bring two large, spare batteries (up to 160 watt hour). You should always check with your airline carrier regarding their guidelines before going to the airport.

Are portable wireless chargers safe or bad for my phone?

You'll be happy to know that portable wireless chargers are generally safe to use. They don't affect your battery any more than a traditional charger. But here’s a good tip for you: If you're looking to preserve your battery, make sure it's always at least 10% charged. On the other hand, don't over-charge it either. Keeping it at 80% charged helps extend the life of your battery.

Do portable chargers come charged?
