 Adding a computer with a wireless adapter to a wireless network using Windows 7  Before you begin: You’ll need your SSID, encryption key and Security Key Type (WPA or WEP). You can obtain this information one of three ways:

  • Review the sticker on the back of your router. The sticker displays the SSID and encryption key information. By default routers are configured as WPA. You may have to choose WEP if the device you wish to connect is not accepting WPA mode.

  • Use In-Home Agent to view your settings: You can access In-Home Agent on a PC that is already connected to Verizon Online. Within In-Home Agent, go to the Networking tab and select Retrieve SSID and WEP/WPA key.

  • Log in to your router from a PC already connected to your network. The instructions you follow depend on the type of router you use to connect to Verizon.

 

To add a computer with a wireless adapter to a wireless network using Windows 7:

  1. Right-click the network icon in the notification area to open Connect to a Network. [Show Me]


  2. When the list of available wireless networks displays, select the network you want to join and click Connect.


  3. If you're prompted for the network security key (WPA2, WPA, or WEP), enter the network security key or passphrase and click Ok. You should be connected to the network.

Confirming your network connection

After the message displays confirming that you are connected to the network, you can verify the computer has been added to the network.

  1. Click Start in the lower left Taskbar.
  2. Click Control Panel. [Show Me]
  3. Enter "network" in the search box and select View network computers and devices under Network and Sharing Center. [Show Me]
  4. Verify that you see the icon for the computer you're adding to the network included with the icons for the other computers connected to this network.
