Unapologetically Ambitious

On today’s Up To Speed Live, Andy welcomed Shellye Archambeau, a member of our Board of Directors since 2013. She previously served as the CEO of MetricStream, Inc., a leading provider of governance, risk, compliance and quality management solutions, making her one of the first female African American CEOs in Silicon Valley.

Shellye explained how proud she is to be a member of our Board of Directors, pointing out that multiple studies have shown that companies with a diverse board perform better. Not surprisingly, here at Verizon, four out of nine of our directors are women or people of color.

Shellye also tells the story of how, at age 16, a guidance counselor asked her what she wanted to do beyond going to college. Shellye realized she liked leading clubs, so she set a goal that by age 40 she would lead a company as CEO.

Shellye believes everyone has a right to be ambitious and go after whatever it is they’d like to do. The key is to figure out what that thing is and not keep it a secret. “If you don’t tell the universe what you want to do, the universe - and other people - can’t help you get it.”

You can follow her on LinkedIn or Twitter. Also find out more about her book here.

Valuable 500

As we continue to foster greater equity within and beyond our walls, Verizon has joined the Valuable 500 -- a coalition of the world’s largest businesses dedicated to driving greater disability inclusion. And with this announcement, expect more to come when it comes to our important work with this organization.
