On today’s Up To Speed, Diana lifted our spirits with the following updates.

Do good drones

Skyward, our commercial drone company, handles more than just a wide range of business applications in the skies. The team has been partnering with marine mammal researchers and related nonprofit organizations to help them rescue and protect animals such as seals.

“Any time we’re monitoring animals, we want to make sure that we’re not disturbing them,'' said Gennifer Brookshire, a marine biologist and FAA-certified drone operator. “A lot of animals respond well to drones.”

The testing of various drones allowed Skyward to educate marine biologists on which models are quietest and most effective for each type of animal being studied. “Monitoring seals with drones is just the beginning,” said Gennifer. “Looking forward, we have a lot to be excited about.”

My Why: Aleena Taufiq

On this week’s My Why, meet Aleena Taufiq, an MTS II Data Manager in Irving, TX, who is much more than a data scientist. While Aleena has the ability and tenacity to build robots and Slurpee machines, she spends more of her spare time volunteering for the nonprofit she founded. Geared Up is an engineering enrichment program that helps underprivileged kids all over the country.

Aleena, thank you for all you do, and for inspiring all of us to do more.

September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 19 years since 9/11. You can check the volunteer portal for different ways to give back. A $10 donation will be made to the 9/11 fund for each V Teamer who signs up for a volunteer event from September 4-11. Let’s remember this day of remembrance and heroism by making a positive impact on our communities.

That’s all for now. Have a great weekend!
