How to use Verizon Messages (Message+) on Android™ devices

Verizon Messages (Message+) is a texting app that lets you sync your texting conversations across all your compatible devices.

Important: Starting in September 2024, Verizon will shut down the Verizon Message+ app. Sunset of the app completes by November 2024:

  • Once the Message+ app is shut down, you won’t be able to use the Message+ app to send and receive messages.
    • For Android devices, Verizon recommends switching to Google Messages as the replacement app for messaging. For more information, see VZ Messages Recommendations.
    • Apple Messages is recommended for iPhone and iPad devices. 
  • eGift cards are no longer available to buy through Message+ after April 2024. You can redeem previously purchased eGift cards after this date.

    Set Up and Manage your Verizon Messages (Message+) Account

      To use Verizon Messages (Message+), you need a compatible device. You can download Verizon Messages (Message+) through the Google Play™ Store on your device for no charge.*

      *Data charges may apply while downloading if connected to the Verizon Wireless network.

      Set Up Verizon Messages (Message+) on a Smartphone

      Verizon Messages (Message+) comes already installed on many Verizon Android smartphones. If it's not on your phone follow the steps below. For tablet setup, refer to the steps on setting up Verizon Messages (Message+) on a tablet.

      1. Open the Play Store app on your mobile phone or tablet.
      2. Enter "Verizon Messages" in the Search field.
      3. Tap the Search key.
      4. Select Verizon Messages from the search results.
      5. Tap INSTALL and follow the prompts.

        Note: You may see ENABLE instead of INSTALL. This means the app is on your device but has been disabled. Tap ENABLE to start using Verizon Messages.
      6. Once the app is installed, open it.
      7. If promoted, read and accept the Terms & Conditions.
      8. Tap Start Messaging.
      9. If desired, edit the nickname for the device.
      10. Enter your mobile phone number.
      11. Tap Send Code.
      12. You'll receive a free text on your phone with a security code. Enter the code in the app on the device to set it up on your Verizon Messages (Message+) account.

      You've successfully downloaded Verizon Messages and added your Android device to your account.

      Set Up Verizon Messages (Message+) on your tablet or Palm (connected device)

      Verizon Messages (Message+) comes already installed on many Verizon Android devices. If it's not on your device:

      1. Open the Play Store app on your mobile phone or tablet.
      2. Enter "Verizon Messages" in the Search field.
      3. Tap the Search key.
      4. Select Verizon Messages from the search results.
      5. Tap INSTALL and follow the prompts.

        Note: You may see ENABLE instead of INSTALL. This means the app is on your device but has been disabled. Tap ENABLE to start using Verizon Messages.
      6. Once the app is installed, open it.
      7. If promoted, read and accept the Terms & Conditions.
      8. Tap Start Messaging.
      9. If desired, edit the nickname for the device.
      10. Enter your mobile phone number.
      11. If you see a prompt requesting camera access for Message+ tap OK. The app needs access to your camera because you will be scanning a QR code to activate your Palm or tablet.
      12. If you see a prompt asking you to "Allow Message+ to take pictures and record video" tap Allow.
      13. Open the Message+ app on your smartphone and open the message with the QR code.
      14. Scan the QR code with the camera on your Palm or tablet.

      You've successfully downloaded Verizon Messages and added your Palm (connected device) or Android tablet to your account.

      Remove a Device from your Account

      1. Tap the Menu icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Account.
      4. Tap Manage Devices.
      5. Tap Disconnect next to the device you want to remove.
      6. Tap OK.

      You've successfully removed a device.

    Send Messages

      Take and Send a Picture

      To take and send a picture from Verizon Messages (Message+):

      1. From the main Conversations screen, select the contact you want to text.
      2. Tap the + icon in the bottom-left corner.
      3. Tap Camera.

        Note: You can also tap Gallery to select a picture you've already taken.
      4. Tap PHOTO.
      5. Tap the Camera icon to take a picture.
      6. Tap the Send icon.

        Note: If desired, you can also enter a message to send with your picture before tapping Send.

      You've successfully sent a picture from Verizon Messages (Message+).

      Record, Edit and Send a Video

      To record, edit and send a video from Verizon Messages (Message+):

      1. From the main Conversations screen, select the contact you want to text.
      2. Tap the + icon in the bottom-left corner.
      3. Tap Camera.
      4. Tap PHOTO.
      5. Touch and hold the Camera icon to start recording.
      6. Lift your finger off the Camera icon to stop recording.
      7. Edit the video as desired and tap Attach.
      8. Tap the Send icon.

        Note: If desired, you can also enter a message to send with your picture before tapping Send.

      You've successfully recorded, edited and sent a video from Verizon Messages (Message+).

      Find and Send from the Web

      To find something online and send it in a message:

      1. From an open conversation, tap the + icon in the bottom-left corner.
      2. Tap Media Search.
      3. Enter your search terms.

        Note: Images are the default search result type. You can also select GIF files or videos.
      4. Select the item you want to send.
      5. Tap Attach.
      6. Tap the Send icon.

      You've successfully sent an online image or video through a media search.

      Send a Glympse®

      To send a Glympse of your current location:

      1. From an open conversation, tap the + icon in the bottom-left corner.
      2. Tap Glympse.

        Note: If prompted, accept the terms and conditions.
      3. Select what information you want to send to the person you're texting:
        • Share My Location - Show the other person your current location on the map and let them follow your location for the amount of time you select from the dropdown
        • Request Location - Ask to see where the other person is on a map
        • Meet Me @ - Send a specific location where you want to meet the other person
          • Tap Add Destination.
          • Tap Location Search and enter your search terms.
          • Select the location from the search results.
      4. Tap Send in the top-right of the screen.

      You've successfully sent a Glympse.

      Access Yelp®

      You can find information and ratings about restaurants, coffee shops and other places right from Verizon Messages (Message+). To access Yelp through Verizon Messages (Message+):

      1. From an open conversation, tap the + icon in the bottom-left corner.
      2. Tap Places.
      3. Select the place you'd like to go.

      You can then send this information to your friends, family, etc.

      Note: If the recipient doesn't have Verizon Messages (Message+), they'll receive a link to information about the location.

    Delete and Restore Messages and Conversations

      Delete Messages

      To delete messages:

      1. In a conversation, touch and hold a message you want to delete.
      2. Tap Delete Messages.

        Note: You can select additional messages to delete at the same time or tap ALL to delete all messages in the conversation.
      3. Tap the Trash Can icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

      You've successfully deleted a message.

      Delete Conversations

      To delete a whole conversation:

      1. Touch and hold the conversation you want to delete.
      2. Tap Delete Conversation.
      3. Tap Delete.

      You've successfully deleted a conversation.

      Restore Last 90 Days of Messages

      Verizon Messages (Message+) stores your messages from the last 90 days.

      1. Tap the Menu icon.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Account.
      4. Tap Restore Messages.
      5. Select whether to restore from the SD card or from online.

      You've successfully restored your messages.

      Note: Data usage applies unless you're connected to a Wi-Fi network. Restoring from online may take some time if you have a lot of messages to restore.

    Use Auto-Reply

      Set Up Auto-Reply

      To set up Auto-Reply:

      1. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
      2. Tap the Auto-Reply switch to turn it on.
      3. Tap Add a New Message to write your own Auto-Reply message.
      4. Enter your message and tap Save.
      5. Select a duration or date to turn off your Auto-Reply message.
      6. Tap Start.

      You've successfully set up Auto-Reply.

      Note: You can go to the Verizon Messages website to turn on Auto-Reply. Tap or click the Navigation Menu icon in the top-right corner of the page and select Settings. Then follow the onscreen prompts to create your Auto-Reply.

      Turn Off Auto-Reply

      To stop sending Auto-Reply messages:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
      2. Tap the Auto-Reply switch to turn it off.
      3. Tap Stop.

      You've successfully turned off Auto-Reply.

    Group Messaging

      Create a Group Message

      To create a group message with Verizon Messages (Message+):

      Note: Group messages can have up to 250 participants.

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Pencil icon.
      2. Enter the contacts you want to include in the To field.

        Note: Make sure MMS is selected in the Recipients reply to field. If you select Just Me, all responses to your message will be sent to you only, not the rest of the group.
      3. Enter your message.
      4. Tap the Send icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

      You've successfully created a group message.

      Access Details and Manage a Group

      To view the recipient list and add or remove recipients:

      1. Tap the group picture at the top of the conversation to see a list of participants in the group.
      2. Tap Create Message.
      3. If you want to add a recipient, enter a contact name in the To field at the top of the screen.
      4. If you want to remove a recipient, touch and hold the contact name and tap Remove Recipient.

      You've successfully viewed details and managed a group.

      Mute a Group Conversation

      If you don't want to receive notifications for a certain group conversation, you can mute it. You'll still receive the conversation's messages, but you won't be notified every time someone replies to the conversation.

      To mute a conversation:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, touch and hold the group conversation that you want to mute.
      2. Tap Mute Conversation.

        Note: To unmute a conversation, touch and hold the group and tap Unmute Conversation.

      You've successfully muted the group conversation.

    Personalize your Experience

      Upload a Profile Picture or Avatar

      To upload a profile photo or avatar:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Set Avatar.
      3. Tap Tap To Set Public Photo (Optional).
      4. Select one of the options for finding a picture.
      5. Follow the onscreen prompts to select a picture to edit.
      6. Frame your picture as desired and tap Save.

      You've successfully uploaded a profile picture or avatar.

      Customize the Appearance of Conversations

      You can customize all your conversations with the same settings, or each conversation can be customized differently. You can customize the background, bubble style, font and notification tone.

      To customize the appearance of a conversation:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, select a conversation you'd like to customize.
      2. Tap the Menu icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      3. Tap Customize.
      4. Tap Backgrounds.
      5. Select the background you want.

        Note: You can add your own picture by tapping the Plus Sign button. Or tap the Pallet button to change the header and background colors.
      6. Tap the Back icon in the top-left corner.
      7. Tap Conversation Bubble.
      8. Select the type of bubble you want.
      9. Tap the Back icon in the top-left corner.
      10. Tap Tones.
      11. Select the notification tone you want for your messages from the selected contact.
      12. Tap the Back icon in the top-left corner.
      13. Tap the Back icon to return to the conversation.

      You've successfully customized your conversation.

      Set a Signature

      To set a signature that will display on all messages you send:

      1. From the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Application.
      4. Tap the Enable Signature switch to turn it on.
      5. Tap Auto Signature.
      6. Enter your desired signature.
      7. Tap SET.
      8. Tap the Back button twice to go back to the Conversation List screen.

      You've successfully set a signature.

    Use Driving Mode

      Driving mode can be turned on manually or automatically with a paired Bluetooth® connection.

      Manually Turn On Driving Mode

      To manually turn on Driving Mode:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap the Driving Mode switch to turn it on.
      3. A notification will pop up when you use it for the first time. Tap Close.

      Driving Mode is turned on when a car icon appears at the top of the main Conversations screen.

      Set Driving Mode to Turn On by Bluetooth Connection

      To automatically turn on Driving Mode with a Bluetooth connection:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-right corner.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Driving Mode.
      4. Paired Bluetooth devices will be listed. Tap the switch next to the Bluetooth device you want to have trigger Driving Mode automatically (blue means on).

        Note: You can also pair a new device by selecting Add a device that will open your device's Bluetooth settings.

      You’ve successfully set up automatic Driving Mode.

      Turn Off Driving Mode

      To manually turn off Driving Mode:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap the Driving Mode switch to turn it on.

      You've successfully turned off Driving Mode.

      Set a Contact to Receive an Auto-Glympse

      Contacts on the Auto-Glympse list will automatically be sent an Auto-Glympse when Driving Mode is turned on.

      To set a contact to receive an Auto-Glympse:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Location.
      4. Tap Manage Auto-Glympse Contacts.
      5. Tap Add Whitelisted Contacts.
      6. Select the contact you want to receive an Auto-Glympse.

        Note: Repeat steps 5 and 6 to add additional contacts.

      The contact(s) will appear checked on the "Whitelisted Contacts" page.

      Remove a Contact from the Auto-Glympse List

      To remove a contact your Auto-Glympse list:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Location.
      4. Tap Manage Auto-Glympse Contacts.
      5. Uncheck the contact(s) that should no longer receive an Auto-Glympse.

      You've successfully removed a contact from Auto-Glympse.

      Turn Off Auto-Glympse

      To turn off Auto-Glympse:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Tap Location.
      4. Tap the Enable Auto-Glympse switch to turn it off (gray means off).

      You've successfully turned off Auto-Glympse.

    Use Message Scheduling

      Schedule a Message

      To write a message now and schedule it to send later:

      1. On the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Scheduled Messages.
      3. Tap the Pencil icon.
      4. Tap the To field and enter a contact's name or number, and select a contact from the results.
      5. Tap OK.
      6. Enter your message in the Type a message… field.
      7. Tap the Schedule icon (i.e., clock).
      8. Select a date and time to send the message.
      9. Tap Schedule.
      10. Tap OK.

      You've successfully scheduled a message.

      Note: You can also schedule any message to send later by touching and holding the Send icon and selecting the date and time you want it to send.

      Cancel a Scheduled Message

      To cancel a scheduled message:

      1. From the main Conversations screen, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Scheduled Messages.
      3. Tap the Menu icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      4. Tap Delete.
      5. Select the message(s) you want to delete.
      6. Tap DELETE.

      You've successfully canceled a scheduled message.

    Send Gifts

      Send an eGift

      1. From within a conversation, tap the + icon.
      2. Tap eGifts.
      3. Select the eGift you want to send.
      4. If available, select the eGift style you like.
      5. Select the amount.
      6. Write your message.
      7. Choose how you want to pay for the eGift:
        • Charge My VZ Account: When you charge an eGift to your Verizon Wireless account, it will appear on your next month's bill.
        • Credit/Debit Card: You can use a new credit card or select one you've previously used and saved.

          To pay with a saved card:
          • Tap the card you want to use.
          • Enter your PIN.
          To pay with a new card:
          • Enter the requested card info.
          • If you plan to buy future eGifts with this card, make sure the box next to Save This Card Info is checked. The next time you buy an eGift, you won't be asked to enter your card information again.
          • If you saved your card, you'll be asked to create a PIN. Enter your same PIN twice to verify it. Your PIN must be 4-6 numbers. Next time you use this card to pay, you'll be asked for the PIN to verify your purchase.
          • Tap Create PIN.
          • Tap OK.
      8. Tap PURCHASE.

      You'll receive a text confirming that a purchase was made.

      The Account Owner will receive an email that a purchase was made.

      Add a Credit Card for Sending eGifts

      When you add a credit card, buying eGifts is even quicker because you don't have to enter your card info each time. You can save a credit card when you buy an eGift or from the Verizon Messages (Message+) main Conversations screen:

      1. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap eGift Catalog.
      3. Tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      4. Tap ADD A CREDIT CARD.
      5. Enter your credit card information.
      6. Tap Add Card.
      7. If prompted, enter a 4-6 digit PIN, which you'll be asked for anytime you pay for an eGift with a saved credit card. Enter the PIN again to verify it, and tap Create Pin.

      You've successfully added a new credit card for future payment. Next time you buy an eGift you'll be able to save time by selecting your saved card.

      Remove an eGift Credit Card

      You can delete a saved credit card that you no longer want to use for eGifts. If you forget your credit card PIN, you'll need to remove all of your saved credit cards and then add them again. You'll be asked to create a new PIN when you re-add your card.

      To remove a saved credit card:

      1. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap eGift Catalog.
      3. Tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      4. Tap the Trash icon next to the card you want to delete.
      5. Tap Remove Card.

      You've successfully deleted your saved card.

      Change your eGift Credit Card PIN

      You can change your credit card PIN anytime in Verizon Messages (Message+). You'll need to know your current PIN to change it. If you've forgotten your current PIN, you can reset your PIN.

      To change your PIN:

      1. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap eGift Catalog.
      3. Tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      4. Tap CHANGE PIN.
      5. Enter your current PIN.
      6. Enter your new PIN twice.
      7. Tap Change Pin.

      You've successfully changed your PIN.

      Reset your eGift Credit Card PIN

      If you've forgotten your current PIN, you can reset your PIN. This will delete all your saved credit cards from Verizon Messages (Message+). Then you can add your cards again and create a new PIN.

      To reset your PIN:

      1. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap eGift Catalog.
      3. Tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
      4. Tap CHANGE PIN.
      5. Tap Forgot Pin?
      6. Tap Reset Pin.

      This will delete your PIN and all saved cards on your account. Then you can add your card(s) again and create a new PIN.

      Buy Data and Send it to a Verizon Wireless Customer

      With data gifting, you can buy and send data as a gift to any Verizon Wireless customer, right from your device. To learn more, go to our Data Gifting FAQs.

      To buy and send data:

      1. While in a conversation, tap the + icon.
      2. Tap eGifts.
      3. Tap Verizon Mobile Data.
      4. Select how much you want to send.
      5. Enter a message to the recipient.
      6. Tap PURCHASE.

      You've successfully sent a data gift. The cost will be charged to your Verizon account and will appear on your next month's bill.

    Calling

      Confirm HD Voice is Enabled on your Phone

      Before you can use Calling on your Palm (connected device), tablet or smartwatch, you must have HD Voice set up on your phone line.

      To confirm HD Voice is enabled:

      1. On your phone, open your Settings.

        Note: These steps are for an Android phone. If you have iPhone®, go to our Confirm HD Voice Is Enabled on Your iPhone page for instructions to complete this step. Then return to this page to finish setting up your Palm or Android tablet.
      2. Tap Advanced Calling.
      3. Tap Advanced Calling again.

      If the switch is set to On, you have HD Voice on your line. If not, tap it to turn it on.

      Note: You can also check if HD Voice is on your line by going to the Services & Perks page in My Verizon on your computer or mobile browser.

      Update your Emergency Address on your Palm or Tablet

      You'll be prompted to set up your emergency address when you first set up Verizon Messages (Message+) on your Palm (connected device) or tablet.

      If you want to change your emergency address:

      1. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner of the main Conversations screen.
      2. Tap UPDATE next to your current Emergency 911 address.
      3. Update your address as needed.
      4. Tap SAVE.

      You've successfully updated your emergency address.

      By entering an emergency address, you are providing information to the Network that determines how your 911 call will route and will be provided to emergency services if you are unable to report your physical location. This address will be used if you call 911 using the Verizon Messages (Message+) app. This information is not used for billing or other purposes. Whenever possible, use your phone to call 911 in an emergency and tell the 911 operator where you are.

      Enable the Voice or Video Calling Feature on your Palm or Android Tablet

      To enable Calling for your Palm (connected device) or tablet:

      1. Confirm you have HD Voice on your phone line.
      2. Download or update the Verizon Messages (Message+) app from the Google Play Store on your Palm or tablet. You may have to follow the onscreen instructions to link the device to your smartphone. For step-by-step instructions, go to the Set Up Verizon Messages section.
      3. Provide your emergency address for the Palm or tablet when prompted.* This location will be given to emergency services if you dial 911 from your Palm or tablet in case of an emergency. See the Emergency Address section in our FAQs for additional information.

      You can now make and receive calls on your Palm (connected device) or tablet. Repeat steps 1-3 for each device you want to connect to your smartphone. You can connect up to 5 devices total.

      *By entering an emergency address, you are providing information to the Network that determines how your 911 call will route and will be provided to emergency services if you are unable to report your physical location. This address will be used if you call 911 using the Verizon Messages (Message+) app. This information is not used for billing or other purposes. Whenever possible, use your phone to call 911 in an emergency and tell the 911 operator where you are.

      Turn the Calling Feature On and Off

      To turn the Calling feature on and off:

      1. In the Messages+ app, tap the Navigation Menu icon in the top-left corner of the main Conversations screen.
      2. Tap the Calling switch to turn it on or off.

      When the switch is blue, it’s on. When the switch is gray, it's off.

      Make a Call Through Verizon Messages (Message+) on your Phone, Palm or Tablet

      To place a call from Verizon Messages (Message+):

      1. From the main Conversations screen, swipe a contact's picture to the right.
      2. Tap Call.

      You've successfully called someone through Verizon Messages (Message+). Tap End to hang up.

      Note: You can also call a contact from within their conversation screen. Tap the Phone icon in the top-right corner of the screen. If the person you're calling has HD Video Calling enabled, you'll see the Video icon as well. You'll be able to switch from video call to voice call during your conversation.
