On today’s Up To Speed, Diana Alvear hosted another episode of Entérate — a roundup of what’s happening in and for the Latinx community at Verizon.

Viva La Liga

Whether you call it “fútbol” or soccer, to many around the world it’s the “beautiful game.” Luis Garcia, former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid superstar, graciously opened the show giving us a preview of our awesome new partnership with LaLiga, the top division of the pro Spanish soccer league. As a fan herself, Diana was excited to discuss our partnership with three LaLiga hosts: RatedHugo, a pro gamer; veteran LA media host Mando Fresko; and former pro women’s player Melissa Ortiz.

Gaming has exploded over the last decade, including massive growth within the Hispanic community. LaLiga North America and Verizon launched an always-on gaming platform for amateur gamers, featuring the EA Sports FIFA video game.

”Verizon is changing the game for us,” said Patrick Lowe, from La Liga’s Partnerships team. “We're doing virtual watch parties with them this year during COVID, which we weren't doing before, and it's bringing that technology and that innovation to it. And then on the gaming side, the FIFA All-Star Gaming Challenge presented for Verizon has just been amazing.”

Great gaming deals

Speaking of gaming, Verizon has a deal right now to help you add lots of new games to your mobile gaming library. New and existing customers get six months of Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass on us with any unlimited plan or 12 months on us with “Play More” or “Get More” plans. It’s all available through Mix and Match Unlimited.

Uforia Hangouts

While many of us are excited to get back to live events, Uforia has been keeping us going with their spectacular Hangout sessions, an intimate and unfiltered livestream experience presented by Verizon.

“Verizon and Univision are two companies that share similar values,” said Univision’s Jackie Guerrido, who hosts the Uforia Hangout sessions. “It’s lovely to interview so many artists that share their personal stories. And most importantly, all of their fans can connect with them. Who doesn’t like to be able to connect with their favorite artist?”

This year, we’ll continue to offer more great content to Latin music fans. Uforia Hangout sessions is a live show featuring some of the biggest stars as guests, including Wisin, Jay Cortez, Lunay, Banda MS, La Adictiva and, in the following weeks, Kali Uchis and Rauw Alejandro.

You can catch the live stream every Wednesday night at 8 PM ET/ 5 PM PT on YouTube, Univision.com and Twitter.

Tips from La Tienda

Chris Estrada-Ballesteros, Solutions Specialist and tech guru from Lady Lake, FL, shared some shopping tips as we head into peak summer season. He recommends Apple’s Air Tags, which can be used to track just about any misplaced item. Chris has found them invaluable when searching for his backpack. When it comes to a speaker for the beach, Chris suggests the JBL Charge 4, which is waterproof and will charge your phone for you. He also likes the Apple MagSafe charger and combines it with an Apple MagSafe case, which can work together to stick your phone to the wall and charge at the same time.

Entérate is all about introducing you to outstanding Latino and Latina V Teamers and this next person is someone we can all be proud of. Marcela Urrutia Zamora is making sure our voices are heard in Washington, DC.

V Teamer profile: Marcela Urrutia Zamora

Marcela Urrutia Zamora and her family have lived an epic life journey, even if she now works only minutes from where she grew up in Washington, DC. Her mother’s family had to leave their home country of Bolivia due to a coup d'etat, leaving with little more than the clothes they were wearing, giving Marcela a lasting interest in politics and appreciation for democracy.

After an internship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, she took a job with a national Latino civil rights organization, working on immigration and civil rights issues for several years. She was eventually recruited to work for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and later recruited again to be part of Verizon's Federal Government Relations Team.

As a lobbyist, Marcela talks to the members of Congress and their staff and raises awareness of issues that Verizon cares about.

“Latinos care about immigration, but we also care about health care, housing and taxes. All issues that impact the Latino community.”

Marcela urges young people starting their careers to not be afraid. “Don't be ashamed. Ask for help. Ask for advice. That's how you learn the system.”

Great advice for anyone - thank you Marcela! Entérate will be back soon with a focus on la familia and money. If you have any story ideas for us, feel free to reach out to Diana. Cuidate y nos vemos pronto!
