Top 10 Things to Do with Your New Apple® iPhone® XR

Congratulations on the purchase of your new XR! You now have a powerful tool to keep you constantly connected to the people, places and things that matter most.

Whether this is your first smartphone or you're an experienced smartphone user, the topics below can help you get more out of your new phone.

1. Transfer your content

We've made moving your prized pictures, videos, contacts and more, easier than ever with Verizon's Content Transfer app.

  1. Download the Verizon Content Transfer app to your old phone.
  2. Note: Any contacts or media backed up to any Cloud service (e.g., Verizon CloudiCloudGoogle Drive, etc.) are not transferred by the Content Transfer app and need to be restored to the device using the same service. The Content Transfer app only transfers contacts, media, etc. to the new device that haven't already been backed up to a cloud service.

  3. Activate your new Apple iPhone XR, if you haven't already.
  4. Follow the prompts on both phones to transfer your content from your old phone to your new iPhone XR.

For step-by-step instructions on using the app, visit our Content Transfer Center.

If you already use a cloud service or want to transfer using a computer and need support, visit:

When you're up and running with your new phone, keep your content secure with Verizon Cloud.

2. Download apps

What can you do with your new smartphone? With so many apps to pick from, the possibilities are endless. Increase your productivity, improve your health, track daily tasks, play games and more.

You can search for, browse, review, buy and download apps by visiting the Apple App Store.

Note: To install apps, you must sign in with your Apple ID or create one.

Download the My Verizon app. For detailed instructions, see our How to Use Guide. This app will allow you to:

  • Pay your bill
  • Check your data
  • Manage your account settings

Be sure to download and install Find My iPhone App. Once you lose your phone, it's too late.

For further instructions on downloading apps, visit your iPhone XR Interactive Simulator.

3. Understand and pay your bill

Your First Bill

When you activate a new line of service on a new or existing account, your first bill for that line will be for a partial month or portion of the monthly access charge. This portion is calculated based on the number of days between the date you began service and the last day of your bill cycle.

Even though you're only paying for a partial month, you'll still be given the full minute, text and data monthly allowances of your plan as an added benefit.

Since you're billed in advance, you'll also be charged for the next full month, which may cause your first bill to be higher than you expected. The following month's bill should be closer to what you expected.

Auto Pay

Sign up for Auto Pay and never worry about making a late payment.

  1. Online in My Verizon
    1. Go to the Set up auto pay page.
    2. Choose a payment option, schedule your payment date and tap Continue.
    3. Review the Payment Authorization Terms & Conditions, and tap Confirm auto pay.
  2. In the My Verizon app
    1. Open the My Verizon app and tap the 3-line navigation menu in the top, left of your screen.
    2. Tap Bill.
    3. Tap Setup Autopay and follow the onscreen instructions.

5. Protect your privacy and phone

Take steps to keep your phone safe and secure.

  • Prevent unauthorized use of your phone by setting up lock screen security. You can choose to require a fingerprint, PIN, password, pattern or FaceID® to unlock your phone. Learn how to secure your iPhone XR's lock screen.
  • Avoid a damaged phone and cracked screen by adding a case and screen protector. See which cases and protection accessories are available for your iPhone XR.
  • Get device protection in case your phone is lost, stolen, damaged or becomes defective. We recommend Verizon Protect, our most comprehensive protection service for your device.
  • Always know who's calling you with the Call Filter app. See the name, city, state and picture of incoming calls. You'll be alerted if it's likely a robocaller, spammer or potential fraud. You can even report problem numbers directly in the app.

6. Connect your email accounts

Get ready to read and send email from your new iPhone XR. It can sync with multiple web-based email accounts including Gmail®, Outlook®, Yahoo!® Mail and AOL® Mail. Learn how to set up a personal account.

You can also set up a corporate account.

Note: Email apps often contain settings that let you choose how often new emails are pushed to your phone and how you'll be notified when a new email arrives.

For information regarding your iPhone XR's personal email POP / IMAP email account settings, see our Email Account Settings page.

7. Understand data usage

Your phone uses data when you do things like browse the web, stream music, play videos and send emails on the go. Different apps and activities will use varying amounts of data.

If you have an unlimited data plan, you don't have to worry about monitoring your data usage and keeping it within a monthly limit.

Otherwise, you can monitor your data usage on the My Usage page and set usage alerts in My Verizon, and on your device with the My Verizon app.

Learn more about monitoring data usage >

To help conserve your data usage:

  • Connect to Wi-Fi for data heavy activities like streaming music or video.
  • Turn on settings that alert you to switch to Wi-Fi if attempting data heavy activities.

8. Set up HD Voice

HD Voice provides natural-sounding audio and video calling that's as simple as making a call. You can use your 4G LTE data connection while on a phone call and make a conference call with up to six people.

HD Voice was automatically activated when you purchased your iPhone XR. You just need to turn it on. You can turn it on in your phone's Settings menu or from the Add-ons and apps page in My Verizon and the My Verizon app for Android™.

9. Pair with a Bluetooth® accessory

Bluetooth is a wireless networking technology that lets you connect your phone to other wireless devices, such as headsets, speakers, headphones, fitness bands and even other phones.

To pair with a Bluetooth device:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Switch your Bluetooth to the On position.
  4. Select a device to pair.

Note: Common manufacturer-set PINs are 0000 and 1234.

Typically, once a Bluetooth accessory has been paired with your phone, it can be used with the phone anytime without needing to pair them again.

For further instructions about pairing with a Bluetooth device, see your iPhone XR’s Device Simulator.

10. Maximize battery life

Your iPhone XR is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion battery. With proper care, and by adjusting a few settings on your phone, you can easily prolong your battery's life and extend time between charges.

To maximize battery life:

  • Keep your battery cool.
  • Recharge your battery using the smart charger that came with your phone.
  • Adjust the brightness on your screen to the lowest comfortable level.
  • Turn off battery draining features including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and live wallpapers.
  • Close apps when you're not using them to keep them from running in the background.
  • Enable Low Power Mode. Your new iPhone XR will let you know when the battery level goes down to 20% and again at 10%. By then, you can turn on Low Power Mode with a single tap.

Alternatively, you can manually enable this feature:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Scroll to Battery.
