An overview of Verizon 5G Edge with Microsoft Azure Stack Edge
Microsoft Azure Stack Edge
Co-located on premises with a Verizon Private 5G Network, Microsoft Azure Stack Edge provides compute and storage capabilities for local data processing and residency—to support ultra-low-latency applications.
Verizon Private 5G Network
Private 5G Network provides secure and predictable coverage, with the high bandwidth to support new latency-sensitive applications and increasing volume of devices.
The Private 5G Network relays device data to and from the applications running on the MEC, where it is processed in real time.
On- and off-premises connectivity
Microsoft Azure Stack Edge provides a consistent experience on premises and in the cloud and allows balancing of workloads as needed. Verizon can also provide additional connectivity options to securely connect to external corporate sites as well as the public internet.

Microsoft Azure Stack Edge is an edge compute platform that can be deployed where a Private Wireless Network has been installed for coverage. This allows it to be implemented in almost any location as it is not reliant on public wireless coverage. It provides on-site compute and storage hardware in an "as a service" model. The close proximity of the wireless network and compute resources provide the low latency for those apps that require it.
It also provides enhanced security, since data can be stored locally on premises Private MEC deployments are typically used for mission-critical solutions which rely on low network latency and real-time data processing, such as automated guided vehicles management, computer vision processing, airport ground operations and critical infrastructure monitoring.
There are many possible use cases for 5G Edge with Microsoft Azure Stack Edge, where low latency, high bandwidth, data residency and enhanced security are important. Here are some of them:
Computer vision and machine learning (ML) help ensure the accuracy of item picking.
Data from loT sensors and cameras combined with data analytics can improve machine utilization.
Quality assurance automation
Low-latency computer vision combined with ML catches production defects before they reach customers.
Automated guided vehicles (AGVs)
Monitor and direct AGVs in near real time to improve operational efficiency, enhance safety and reduce collisions.
Airport ground operations
Track, monitor and analyze activity around aircraft and integrate ground and flight operations, fleet planning, passenger reservations and aircraft maintenance.
Critical infrastructure monitoring
Improve management, reduce inspection costs, monitor safety in near real time and manage the physical condition of assets.
5G Edge with Microsoft Azure Stack Edge is available anywhere in the U.S. because it is not reliant on public network coverage. This on-premises solution, made possible with a Private Wireless Network, can enable:
Throughout the campus and beyond, with full operational visibility and data collection via authorized remote access.
Enables consistent connectivity and persistent performance inside, outside and on campus.
Provides a private network with security built in, as well as 24/7 security monitoring to help protect against threats.
Empowers customers to focus on running their business, not their network.
5G Edge with Microsoft Azure Stack Edge is a fully managed Verizon solution that combines the advanced coverage of a Private Wireless Network with the Microsoft Azure Stack Edge infrastructure, for an on-premises solution that supports a broad range of mission critical applications.
With Verizon 5G Edge with Microsoft Azure Stack Edge, you can support workloads that require low-latency access to on-premises systems, local data processing, data residency and migration of applications with local system interdependencies.
5G Edge Services is a value-added platform, pre-integrated with Verizon 5G Edge MEC solutions, that provides special-purpose tools to simplify building, deploying and managing edge computing applications across hybrid environments.
